Stephen David Walsh

Stephen David Walsh was born May 30, 1924 in Grandville, Mich., to David and Florence (Goodrich) Walsh. He graduated from Grandville High School and began community college.

Steve joined the United States Marine Corps in January 1942 and served “for the duration” during WWII as an aircraft mechanic. He was a former member of the American Legion and VFW in Tecumseh.

When the war ended in 1945, Steve attended Ferris State College, where he earned his RPh degree in 1950.  He proudly served as a pharmacist in many area communities and was a member of the Pharmacy Association of Michigan. Steve genuinely cared about those that he worked with and his kindness and compassion have touched many, many lives throughout the years.

In 1958 he met Rosemary Murphy in Tecumseh, and knew that she was the love of his life.  They were married in the Methodist Church by Pastor James Nixon on January 16, 1959, and celebrated almost 59 years of marriage. Together they raised five children: Susan M. Walsh of PawPaw; Kathleen Walsh Karle of Tecumseh; Timothy Walsh of Tecumseh; Margaret “Peggy” (John) Costello of Manitou Beach; and Tom (Debbie) Walsh of Tecumseh. Steve was very proud of his grandchildren: Jason (Fina) Karle, Dylan (Kendra) Karle; Carly, Johnny, and Jacob Costello; Claire, Sydney, Lily and Sophie Walsh; and great grandchildren, Thaddeus, Jacob and Zackary.  Steve’s wife, children and grandchildren were his life.

Steve was a member of the Tecumseh United Methodist Church for 45 years. He served on various committees and sang in the choir. He remained in contact even after he was unable to attend. He was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Wenton and Esther Murphy, his sister Beverly Scott, brothers, Patrick and Kenneth Walsh, a sister-in-law, Marsha and four nieces and nephews. Surviving in addition to his wife and children are a sister-in-law, Carol Walsh, brother-in-law David and Betty Murphy, and sister-in-law, Judy Murphy.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 18, 2017 at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes with Pastor David McKinstry officiating. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post #34 and VFW Post #4187. Visitation was on Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor or the Salvation Army.  Condolences may be made to the family at www.handlerfuneralhomes.com.
