Superintendent candidates prepare for final interviews
After the top six superintendent candidates were interviewed individually in separate appearances before the Tecumseh School Board the last week of January, the board met in special session Monday, Feb. 4, and selected three to offer a second interview. All agreed and individual interview days were arranged with each beginning this week.
Dr. Kelly Coffin will return Tuesday, Feb. 12, followed by Sean McNatt on Wednesday, Feb. 13; and Dr. Michael Osborne on Thursday, Feb. 14. All interviews are open to the public and begin at 7 p.m. in the district administrative services building board meeting room, 212 N. Ottawa St.
The search is being conducted through the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) by superintendent search consultant Richard Dunham. The process began last summer when current Supt. Mike McAran announced his retirement after the current school year, which ends June 30. The board retained the MASB at that time to handle the details of the search. Sixteen candidates replied to the posting last fall.
At Monday’s meeting, Dunham commended the board for its restraint in questioning the six candidates selected in the first round. The board had prepared 21 questions for the applicants and all were asked the same questions in the same order in their individual interviews. This round of questioning will be more direct and more specific, with trustees asking 14 questions that will be more in-depth than the general questions from the first round.
The three final candidates may have some pointed questions of their own for the board after the interviews. Each were given the opportunity by the trustees to ask questions of the board regarding the district and community and all took the opportunity to satisfy their curiosity on a point or two. But in the second round each of the candidates will have spent an entire afternoon in the community, beginning with a district tour at noon, so they may have some questions of their own to pose to the board regarding the school district and community in the second go-around.
After the district tour, the candidates will meet with administrators at the administrative services center, followed by a meeting with the support staff, middle school and high school staff (in the high school media center), and elementary school staff at the Tecumseh Acres Media Center.
The public will have the opportunity to meet and speak informally with each candidate from 4:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on their respective interview days in the administrative services building board meeting room. After the community “meet-and-greet,” interviewees will be offered a dinner at a local restaurant, before returning to the administrative services building for their formal interview at 7 p.m. Interviews are expected to last an hour and a half.
Coffin, McNatt, and Osborne’s interviews appeared in the Monday, Feb. 4, issue of the Tecumseh Herald.
