On Friday, Nov. 21, at approximately 10 p.m., two arrests were made in the armed robbery of Shell Gas Station in Clinton. The two male suspects, Gary Heldt of Britton and Cory Nangle of Petersburg, were taken into custody in Petersburg without incident by the Clinton Police Department, Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, and RHINO, and were delivered to the Lenawee County Jail.At a video bond hearing on Tuesday, the two 17-year-olds were each arraigned in Lenawee County District Court on four felony charges, including Conspiracy Armed Robbery, Felony Firearms, Armed Robbery, and Carrying A Dangerous Weapon With Unlawful Intent.“We received some tips through Crimestoppers,” said Clinton Police Chief Michael Randolph. “One tip in particular led us to a 17-year-old who lives in Britton.”The suspects allegedly entered the Shell Gas Station at 11:41 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18, with one of the men carrying a long rifle with a wood stock. They demanded cash from the store clerk, who gave them an undisclosed amount of money. The men left the scene in a vehicle that was parked at Eden Foods.Through one of the Crimestopper tips, police were alerted that the suspects had then fled to Alabama. Clinton Police worked with other law enforcement agencies to track the two men as they returned to Michigan from Alabama.Heldt and Nangle were found at the home of Nangle’s mother in Petersburg. The car at the home fit the description from the robbery, and they were taken into custody.“We interviewed the subjects and they confessed,” Randolph said.Randolph credits the multi-jurisdictional cooperation in the investigation for the quick resolution and apprehension of the two men.
