Tecumseh’s new AJ Smith Recreation Center is quickly taking shape and is on schedule for completion by the end of 2012 or early 2013, according to Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welsh.

“Everything is going as planned,” Welsh said of the 2.3 million project. “We’re right on schedule.”

Department of Public Works crews and developer Krieghoff-Lenawee have foundation blocks set and sewer/water lines installed as well as metal frames for two multi-use activity buildings, attached to the main entrance building. Welsh added the weather has cooperated in progress and crews working on the new facilities have run into “no surprises.”

Welding crews were working on sections of the building on Monday, July 30, while painters covered the metal framing in white.

Site plans include a main building with two multi-use indoor sports activity courts, offices for the parks and recreation department, rental space for family gatherings and a common area space. The exterior of the steel building will resemble a barn.

The community center is located in John Smith Park on North Evans Street. Welsh said a grand opening would be scheduled in early 2013 when a majority of the work is expected to be complete.
