It was in 2009 when Tecumseh Area Little League (TALL) won its last 10-11 year old state softball championship but this year the organization did it again.

TALL’s 10-11  year old softball team picked up another state title with a close 6-5 victory over Essexville in the Jackson-hosted tournament on Wednesday, July 30.

Local support for the champions was immediately apparent with the girls arriving back in Tecumseh with a police escort and a sign posted congratulating the team at Brownies.

Tecumseh was behind by a run heading into the fifth inning but added a pair of runs to take the lead.

“Sadie Danley got on base and then Abby Treadwell hit the ball in-between the gap in the outfield and she’s the one that scored that run to win the game for us and doesn’t realize it, I don’t think,” said one of the team coaches, Nicole Braun-Benschoter.

After taking the one run lead, Tecumseh still had to record three outs in the final inning to become champions. Libbi Fair struck out the first two batters and the final batter drove one to second base but was out at first to end the game.

“Everybody just threw everything up in the air. It was just amazing,” said Braun-Benschoter. “Oh my goodness it was awesome. These girls finally have learned to finish a tournament, not get down. They are in it until the last out is done.”

Tecumseh opened the tournament in a game against one of its toughest competitors, Georgetown, and was behind heading into the final inning.

“In the bottom of the sixth inning we went without getting an out and scored like six runs to win the game. When we got to that sixth inning it was like now or never and man they were determined.”

Tecumseh went undefeated during the tournament, also defeating Essexville to follow and St. Clair after that.

“It was so cool to win the tournament that way, to just keep coming back,” said Braun-Benschoter.

“Busch’s has supported us big time. Brownies is a big supporter of the Little League. They had their sign ready when we got back in town. That was really cool.”

After getting to Tecumseh the team stopped at Brownies for photos under the sign congratulating the state champs.

Braun-Benschoter mentioned that it’s been several years since TALL has won a state softball championship and said, “For us, that’s really huge for Little League”

The girls on the team have been together since 9U and are expected to stay together next year.

“I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes the next couple of years and then when they hit high school I’m very excited to watch,” said Braun-Benschoter.
