Tecumseh finishes first at Gibraltar Carlson

Tecumseh’s varsity wrestling team placed first at Gibraltar Carlson’s Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 10, after going undefeated with five wins.“We continue to grow with this young team and wrestled hard like veterans,” said Tecumseh head coach George Lesko. “We are really happy to get this group of kids through a very competitive event with a championship!” The Indians beat Riverview 37-33, Ypsilanti 79-6, Edsel Ford 54-16, Lakeland 52-27 and Gibraltar Carlson 47-27.Four of Tecumseh wrestlers went undefeated to help pick up the title. Going undefeated with five wins for the Indians were sophomore Drew Marten (119), junior Josh Marcum (145), freshman Gabe Bechtol (135) and senior Nate Brady (285).Tecumseh seniors Wyatt Cadmus (125) and Kody McCrate (189) went 4-1.Coach Lesko said the Indians are making big strides each week and he is even more confident in the team’s run to Battle Creek at the midway point of the season.Tecumseh traveled to Lincoln on Thursday, Jan. 8, and defeated the Railsplitters 46-24.Seven of Tecumseh wrestlers, freshman Kenny Thorton (103), sophomore Drew Marten (119), freshman Gabe Bechtol (135), junior Kyle Humphries (152) and junior Luke Vandenberg (171) each won with a pin.Tecumseh senior Mike Turner (112) won by void; senior Wyatt Cadmus (130) won by major decision, 14-6; McCrate (215) won with a 9-4 decision and Brady won with an 8-4 decision.“I could not be more proud of the effort our young guys are giving and the experience they are getting while doing so,” said coach Lesko. “We were also to wrestle Ann Arbor Pioneer tonight, but they were unable to be there due to the weather according to their school policy.” Tecumseh earned the win over the Pioneers by way of forfeit.The Indians are now 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the Southeastern Conference. Tecumseh is scheduled to compete next in its Phillip Jaimes Memorial Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 17.
