Tecumseh hosts annual Kiwanis Invitational
Fourteen of 24 events at Tecumseh High School’s annual unscored Kiwanis Swimming and Diving Invitational were won by Chelsea while Adrian followed with the second highest first place finishes with seven.
Events were divided into freshmen/sophomore (Fr/So) and junior/senior (Jr/Sr) divisions.
The hosting Indians didn’t win any event but placed second in seven of the Saturday, Jan. 12, races.
Tecumseh senior Ian Russell placed second in both the Jr/Sr 200-yard freestyle (1:54.53) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.68) to lead the Indians in the meet. He was also a member of Tecumseh’s second place Jr/Sr 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:32.48) with teammates Austin Coleman (Sr.), Matthew Haeussler (Sr.) and Jacob Kimerer (Sr.).
The Indians’ Jr/Sr 200-yard medley relay team of Coleman, Russell, Isaac Bhathena and Kimerer, placed second (1:48.45).
Haeussler also placed second in the Jr/Sr 200-yard IM (2:12.57) while Coleman was also second in the Jr/Sr 100-yard freestyle (51.72).
Bhathena also placed second in the Jr/Sr 50-yard freestyle (23.26) while Shane Lewandowski was second in Jr/Sr diving (314.55).
Haeussler finished third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.79) while Tecumseh freshman Bryant Hagemann placed third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:22.66).
Adrian sophomore Ian Moran placed first in the Fr/So 200-yard IM (2:08.76) and 100-yard backstroke (55.76) while Casey Kucera was first in the Jr/Sr 50-yard freestyle (23.26) and 100-yard butterfly (59.17).
Kucera was also a member of the Maples winning 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:36.62) with teammates Matt Mueller, Khayman Jones and Nick Sarrault.
Jones also placed first in the Jr/Sr 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.05).
Tecumseh was scheduled to compete next at Ypsilanti on Thursday, Jan. 17.
Tecumseh swam at Milan on Tuesday, Jan. 8, and lost 122-64.
Tecumseh placed first in two events with Russell winning the 200-yard IM and Hagemann the 500-yard free style in state cut times.
