Tecumseh Public School set up social media pages

J. Judson Lohman, Tecumseh Public Schools’ (TPS) recently hired public relations, communications and marketing coordinator, is slowly increasing the district’s social media presence as part of the district’s larger goal of marketing itself to the public and highlighting the unique happenings in Tecumseh’s schools. Each school, including Tecumseh Virtual Academy and Tecumseh Options, are now present on Facebook and Twitter with individual pages, in addition to the district itself present on YouTube, Tumblr and Google+. Each school page highlights interesting and exciting content and things happening specifically in those schools, while great things are also highlighted on district-wide pages. “We’re just highlighting the unique things the students are doing in the district,” Lohman said. Other information, such as delays or closing, will also be published on each individual school’s social media page. “It’s just another way of getting information out there,” Lohman added. Lohman hopes to increase traffic and engagement on all the social media pages, recently handing out flyers about the sites at the middle and high school conferences. He added that flyers would be handed out at the upcoming elementary conferences as well. Teachers and administrators can contact Lohman if they would like something posted online or for him to come cover an event. One of the more interesting pushes Lohman has implemented is on YouTube, where recent videos such as highlighting Raku firing in a Tecumseh High School art class reside.“Down the line, I would love to see teachers or administrators, or even students create short videos or features that could be published and shared throughout our various medias as well,” said Lohman. “Hopefully something a lot more interactive and something the students can take ownership of.” The idea of a marketing coordinator grew out of the district’s Strategic Plan to find ways to better market itself to the public while informing parents and students about what the schools are doing. “They’re [social media pages] just different ways of getting information out there, making sure everyone knows what is going on in the schools and everyone can see the good work the district is doing,” Lohman said.
