Tecumseh teens charged with Threat of Terrorism

The two Tecumseh High School (THS) students who were arrested for allegedly plotting to cause a threat of violence against THS students and staff have been formally charged with a Threat of Terrorism. The felony charge carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, according to Tecumseh Police Chief Troy Stern.“You are dealing with minors, so it could be a little different,” Stern added in regards to the two students’ potential sentencing. Currently, the two minors are in juvenile lockup awaiting pretrial and evaluation, according to Lenawee County Juvenile Probate Court Administrator John Drahuschak. No court date has been set as of Friday morning, Sept. 19. Drahuschak added that the evidence collected during the execution of two search warrants is still being investigated. The threat was thwarted after two anonymous phone calls were made to THS Assistant Principal Angel Mensing on Thursday, Sept. 11, regarding two students who were planning to cause harm at the school. Over that Thursday and following Friday, the two students were identified and removed from school. Friday afternoon, Sept. 12, the Tecumseh Police Department took over the investigation, executing two search warrants within the City of Tecumseh. The details of the evidence found during those two searches have not been released so far. “The Tecumseh Police Department wants to assure everyone that the potential for violence related to this complaint was neutralized on September 12th, 2014 and there is no remaining credible threat of violence targeting the Tecumseh High School,” wrote Stern in a press release dated September 16. The investigation is ongoing.
