Tecumseh wrestlers top Adrian to finish first at Onsted Invitational
While most high school sport programs were taking a winter break, Tecumseh’s varsity wrestlers maintained weight and picked up the title at Onsted’s Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 2.Three Indians topped Adrian’s score of 197.5 with a total of 232 points to place first.Tecumseh also entered a B Team (131 points) that finished third ahead of the hosting Wildcats (119 points).The Indians had a lot of younger wrestlers place to help pick up the Wildcats’ title.“We were very happy with our younger kids today who were able to gain some great varsity experience,” said Tecumseh head coach George Lesko. Highlighting the event for the Indians was senior Wyatt Cadmus being named the lower weight class MVP. He went 4-0 and finished first at 130-pounds.Another highlight for the Indians was having heavyweight (285) senior Nate Brady go 4-0 and placed first with the award for fastest pin at only eight seconds.Also finishing first as champions for Tecumseh were: sophomore Drew Marten (4-0, 119), sophomore Nick Rutledge (3-0, 125), freshman Gabe Bechtol (4-0, 135), sophomore Tyler Maclachlan (4-0, 145), junior Kyle Humphries (4-0, 152), junior Luke Vandenberg (4-0, 171) and senior Kody McCrate (4-0, 189).Placing second for the Indians were: freshman Kenny Thornton (2-2, 103), senior Mike Turner (3-1, 112), freshman Hugh Buchanan (2-1, 125), junior Josh Marcum (3-1, 145), senior Jack Dick (3-1, 285) and junior Bryan Tripp (3-1, 160).Placing third for Tecumseh were: senior Andrew Thompson (2-2, 135 B-team), freshman Ryan Roberts (2-2, 140), and senior Vince Hunter (3-2, 215).Placing fourth for Tecumseh were freshman Robbie Hunter (2-2, 112) and junior Adam Shelby (2-2, 140).Tecumseh wrestled Thursday, Dec. 18, at Ann Arbor Skyline. The Indians defeated Ypsilanti 70-6 and Ann Arbor Skyline 73-6.Going undefeated for Tecumseh were Mike Turner (112), Drew Marten (119), Nick Rutledge (125), Cadmus (130), Adam Shelby (135), Austin Zamora (140), Josh Marcum (145), Kyle Humphries (152), Bryan Tripp (160), Caleb Tabor (189), Vince Hunter (215) and Brady (285).Going 1-1 for Tecumseh were Kenny Thorton (103) and Luke Vandenberg (171).Coach Lesko said the match of the evening featured freshman Kenny Thornton who wrestled at 103 and weighed in at 87.2 pounds. “He was losing a match to Ypsilanti 8-1 and came back strong in the third period to get a pin,” Lesko said. “It was certainly a great moment for him and a great moment to see how much our team supports each other.
