Velma Leota Smith

Velma Leota Smith, age 99, of Tecumseh passed away at Herrick Manor on February 2, 2013. Velma was born March 5, 1913 in Vinton County Ohio, the daughter of Perry and Clara Huff. On April 27, 1934, she married Lawrence R. Smith in Catlettsburg, Kentucky. He preceded her in death on May 26, 1999.Velma worked at Ford Motor Company in Saline for 17 years, retiring in 1974. She was an avid reader and a staunch believer that you are never too old to learn. She belonged to the Shamrock card club in Clinton for many years. She also played cards and bingo at the Tecumseh Senior Center. She loved spending time in her flowers, playing in the dirt as she called it.Velma is survived by one son Franklin (Bonnie) Smith of Tecumseh, two Grandsons, David (Ginny) Smith of Onsted and Daniel Smith of Owosso. Two great-grandchildren, Tara Smith of Tecumseh and Trad Smith of Holland. Three great-great-grandchildren, Chelan, Kaden and Myah of Tecumseh and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother, all of Ohio.Visitation was from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. February 5, 2013 at J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh.Graveside services and burial followed on Wednesday Feb. 6, 2013 at Londonderry Cemetery, Londonderry, Ohio.Condolences may be offered online at www.pursefuneralhome.com.
