Willard Claude Cleland

Willard Claude Cleland, age 88, of Tecumseh died Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at ProMedica Herrick Hospital with family near him. He was born July 22, 1929 in Eskridge, Kan., the son of the late Claude and Cora (Bolton) Cleland. On May 4, 1958 he married M. Frances Pippin and they have shared over 59 years together.

Willard graduated from Kansas State in 1952 with an agricultural engineering degree.  After graduation Willard proudly served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Army.  He then went to work 30 years for Massey Ferguson and then for the City of Adrian Drain Commission for seven years.  He was a member of Grace Bible Church, an avid golfer, weekend bowler and a small-time farmer.  After retiring he and his wife volunteered with Gleaners and at Hidden Lake Gardens. Willard’s greatest love was his children and grandchildren. They were his pride and joy and he enjoyed watching them in all their activities.

Besides his wife, Frances, he is survived by his children, Sherri (Kenneth) Achtenberg of Tecumseh, Willard Claude (Judi) Cleland, Jr of Georgia, and Mary (Brian) Finkbeiner of Saline; six grandchildren, Scott, Craig, Jacob, Emily, Tonya and Bobbi and seven great-grandchildren, Nikysha, Tristani, Alanna, Alison, Aiden, Emmett and Gage.  He was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.

Visitation was held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at Grace Bible Church. A funeral service was held at 12:30 p.m. with Pastor Lawrence LaFollette officiating. Military honors followed the service under the auspices of American Legion Post #34 and VFW Post #4187.  Memorial contributions may be made to the church or the American Heart Association.
