Saving the planet in the dark?

Okay, so my "beat" last week was far away from Tecumseh -- in Alabama. We sacrificed and compromised so we could take this little break away from winter. On the way there, I encountered something in Nashville, Tennessee, that didn't set to well with me. We stayed at a chain hotel that used to be trustworthy for being clean and comfortable. They are in the process of "going green." And if this is what "green" is, then I'm afraid I'm not getting on that bandwagon. Maybe that makes me selfish or something, but let me explain. There were 2 little lights over the beds. They were fitted with those new type "green" eco-friendly bulbs. There was one small entry light, and one overhead light over the sink and one in the bathroom - all DIM! It was like entering a cave and forget about reading the newspaper I picked up at the front desk. A new sink had just been mounted on top of the counter. It was a funny-looking thing that was flat, so you couldn't put much water in it, and had no pressure, with one temperature - tepid. Furnishings were minimal, pillows and mattress thin. They didn't even have a Gideon Bible in the room, I guess so there's less to dust around. I know that the corporate world is getting a lot of pressure to "go green" as are consumers. I can tell you this: my experience so far with the new light bulbs, even at home, is they don't give off the light needed to DO anything, and if it's going to send you to the optometrist and take two lamps to do the work of one, what's the point? I'm all for helping the environment; I'm willing to make some sacrifice (and do), and I do my part. But when I'm paying for a night's comfort (and the prices have not been reduced, quite the contrary) I want to be able to see what I'm doing (and if there's anything crawling in the room) and not feel like I'm in some dank dive. There's got to be a way to do our part to help save the planet without having to do it in the dark.
