Questions decision to layoff teachers over sport complex costs
To the Editor,
Sixteen Tecumseh school district teachers have lost their jobs in order to balance the school budget. Do we know how much the yearly operating budget for the new Sports Complex will be? I’d like to suggest to Mr. Mike McAran that he work this next school year for $1 and surrender his salary for the sake of the district! I feel it would also help to cut a P.E. teacher (or two) in order to reduce the budget.
English is a 4-year subject versus gym which is a quarter credit. Why do we need yoga class over English class? I want to know how many kids who have left our district did so because of our sports facilities? Clinton’s workout room is a converted two-car garage that’s on school grounds, so I don’t think our athletic facilities have anything to do with kids leaving our schools! I think large class sizes has a lot to do with it and now that you have cut these 16 teachers the classroom will be even larger making the problem even bigger!
Maybe parents simply want a school system that understands “student athlete” not “athlete student.” Maybe the school board with its actions have driven kids out of the district by not listening to parents. I know I don’t feel bad for the school board who have earned the mess they have made for themselves.
How many of those 16 teachers coach a sport for the school?
I’m sure the answer is none. We all know how the school board works!

Mr. Bailey, The Athletic facilities were just the last straw for some Parents….. Parents like you and I know have been moving their children for some years because of the irresponsibleness of Mr. McAran, Mr. Mills and the school Board. I Questioned why TEACHERS were the only ones COACHING….. If you look just about all of the Coaches we have are teachers. Not all but just about. In all of the basketball positions all but ONE was a non teacher hired for the past 9 to 10 openings over the last six years. These all were teachers who should be concentrating on TEACHING most IN fact are not very good at coaching in the first place…..
But they are given a chance to make some more money and O yea are good to be around. These people are not losing their jobs, heck no………. Parents are sick of what Mr. McAran and the Board is doing and THAT is why they are sending their kids to Clinton, Britton, Adrian, EXC……… Mr. McAran can place the blame on other things all he wants. Those tings are not the real reason we have a drop in enrollment. Mr. McAran and Mr. Mills need to fined, for impersonating a Superintendent and Athletic Director. PROBLEM is if you speak the truth…… THEY state that you’re not supporting them or their coaches…… And put you on their BLACK list!!!!!!!!!!! If you’re not a TEACHER, well than you, to them know NOTHING….. Because you’re not in their little group.
They will not do what is right….. Because they don’t see what they are doing as wrong!!!!! The have the power to continue to do whatever they want……
I ASK ALL OF YOU THIS…….. WE HAVE A OPEN JV BASKETBALL POSITION FOR BOYS AGAIN………. WILL THEY POST IT AND HIRE THE RIGHT PERSON? OR WILL THEY JUST HAND IT OVER TO SOMEONE……
I also ask HOW did they hire MR. Mossburg for the Girls Varsity Position?? How did they move MR. Gibson back to the Middle School?? Heck why can they not just hire someone that really want to and can coach??
But come on, they can not plan, organize and control athletics …. How can they do the same for the school.

Thank you for your comment and I agree with you ! I think the teachers union forces teachers or school staff tobe coaches under the contract doesnt it ? Didnt that happen after the track fiasco afew years ago. My son will be a senior this next school year and is a football player and has been since the 7th grade . I have been able to stay out of the "CLICKS" and the "POLITICS" all of these years until now ! My concern now is more about Mr. Mensing and the pressure put on him to win due to this feild and the boys suffering for it !
Teacher Union, I have asked
TeacherUnion , I have asked Griff about this and his response was never yes or no…. on the subject… His answer to me was just they system is not against me. It may be that the teachers union says that they get the position first. I do not necessary feel that that is right after all, don’t we want the best person that we can get for the positions? I can also understand the being weary of things after the Track Coach!! But it is easy to do a back ground check and review references…. Heck do businesses say we must always hire from a cretin group of people just because the manager took money from the business…… NO It is just ridicules…… And if true eliminates so many good coaches.
Coaches/Teachers win the race!
Three days ago one of the elementary physical education teachers was told he was being bumped out of a job due to the 16 teachers being laid off. Today, he was told he had his job back because things had been rearranged. (He is a wonderful teacher by the way, and none of this information was told by him, as I'm sure he doesn't want to do anything to lose the grace he was granted.) It's just amazing that the teachers who are also coaches manage to keep their jobs!

Thank you for your comment, Im happy the teacher kept his job but I cant understand why the high school has gym, advanced gym, body conditioning, advance body conditioning,etc...
More to the story...
just for clarification, he is an elementary school PE teacher...and he is split between two different elementaries where students only get 28 minutes of gym 2 or 3 days a week, depending on the week. The Arts (including PE) are usually the first thing to get cut when looking at debt reduction, and always at the elementary level. Apparently it's not as important for kids to learn these things when they are at the age when the learning is best! I guess the thought is plump 'em up in the elementary, then slim them down in the high school. Sorry....I'm reaching....trying to figure out why this is...nope, still can't.
The nutrition class at the
The nutrition class at the H.S. doesnt cook with meat due to the budget ! The Home Improvment class only does 1/2 of the assignments due to the budget not allowing for materials ! This is why I get so fired up over these issues I am trying to figure it out also and I CANT ???
considering we have a state
considering we have a state championship softball team and the softball feild is new how come we dont have kids coming to T.PS. to play softball ? we have a new school that offers more than Clinton or Britton combined but we still lose students to them ?
