Clinton busts loose in fourth inning

Clinton’s varsity softball team defeated visiting Sand Creek 7-0 on Wednesday, April 28, and followed with a close 1-0 win at home against visiting Summerfield on Friday, April 30.

The contest against Sand Creek was scoreless until the fourth inning when Clinton began connecting at the plate. Jordan Randall hit a single and scored on a bunt by Abi Clark after a wild throw zipped past third base.

Kelcey Baker followed with an RBI double that scored Clark and then Emily Sell stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run home run over the center field fence.

No runs were recorded in the fifth inning but Clinton added the rest of its runs in the sixth inning. Clinton’s Tierney Nelson singled to load the bases in the sixth while Kelsey Karapas tagged a triple to clear the bases.

Kristen Espinoza earned the pitching win and improved to 5-0. She gave up just one hit while walking none and striking out 11.

Baker went 2-for-3 for Clinton while Sell was perfect at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance.

Against Summerfield, Clinton was unable to record a hit but produced one run in the seventh inning to win the game. Randall connected on a pitch that Summerfield’s shortstop had a problem with. The ball was thrown over first base and Randall became Clinton’s first base runner. Randall quickly stole second base on Abi Clark’s next at bat and then stole third base when a pitch got away from Summerfield’s catcher. Clark drilled a pitch to deep center field, allowing Randall to score the game-winning run.

Summerfield’s Emily Puttererbaugh threw a complete game no-hitter but recorded the loss. She struck out 14 and didn’t give up any walks in the contest. Clinton’s Tierney Nelson struck out 15, allowed four hits and hit a batter.

Clinton improved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the Tri-county conference.
