Former Tecumseh man faces attempted murder charge in Connecticut

The quick thinking of a Tecumseh Police Department dispatcher may have helped save the life of a woman who once lived in the city and had been stabbed in another state. On Monday, Dispatcher Monica Andrews received a call from the Lenawee County Sheriff Department regarding two 911 hang-up calls on Union Street. She sent two cars and they found that no one was home. Soon, police determined that a woman who currently lives there was at work.
Andrews said the calls came from a woman who was screaming and could not speak English so no one could understand her. When a neighbor reported that an Asian woman used to live at the Union Street address a few years ago, Andrews decided to check further on the situation. She said the further research, using Google and a law enforcement network, identified that the former resident was living at an address in Connecticut. She realized that the cell phone’s 911 system may have still been connected to the Lenawee County area, where the woman originally purchased her phone.

“Then I Googled the police department for that area and gave them the address and phone number, and when they went to that address, they found the woman and she had been stabbed,” Andrews said. “She was in a pool of blood at the top of the stairs but she was still alive.”

A news article in the New Haven Register reported that Jeffrey Asbill, 48, has been charged with attempted murder in Ledyard, Connecticut. The Connecticut State Police found him over the woman that the article said was his wife, and also charged him with first-degree assault. He was ordered held in lieu of $500,000 bail pending arraignment in New London Superior Court in that state.

The woman, whose name was not released, was taken to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut, where she was treated for a stab wound to her upper chest area, a punctured lung and lacerations to her left hand, according to police reports as reported in the New Haven Register.

The victim told police detectives that Asbill had lost his job at Pfizer and was treated in the past for mental health issues. Police reports note that Asbill was convinced he would not be able to provide for his family.

Police also said that Asbill appeared dazed and was not responding to officers when he was arrested at the scene of the crime. He has since made a confession, admitting to the stabbing, and the case was transferred to a New London court with an appearance scheduled for Dec. 2.

Dispatcher Andrews said she hasn’t told a lot of people about her role in the incident — however, her quick thinking and use of the tools available to her may have helped save the woman’s life.

Nice job Monica. Dispatchers

Nice job Monica. Dispatchers often get overlooked for the contributions they make to public safety. "Dispatchers save seconds, seconds save lives!"

Excellent Job!

Monica, you can and should be proud.  I seriously hope there is some recognition from Connecticut for your going above and beyond and saving a life!  Even a simple thank-you goes a long way for an often thankless job.

Good Job

This fast acting; highly trained; quick thinking; and very bright police professional should be given a huge raise, more vacation time, and the highest community service award.

It is obvious, to me, that her abilities and talent are a direct result of carrying some of the same genetic structure as her uncle (the tall one.)

Seriously.... Ms. Andrews is my niece and I am very proud of her.

cell phone’s 911 HOW DOES THAT WORK?

" cell phone’s 911 system may have still been connected to the Lenawee County area, where the woman originally purchased her phone." HOW DOES THAT WORK? I find that rather disturbing!! So If I call 911 on my cell - where does it GO?

Piper

I can't tell you specifically, piper, as I not know the specifics.  I do have friends that are Dispatchers for Washtenaw County and cell phones have caused a huge amount of work for them to determine the call origination since they are mobile.

Since people are foregoing their land-lines in favor of cell phones, there is not the immediate residence information that appears when a 911 call is made. I know in Washtenaw, at least until a year ago, most all cell 911 calls went to the County Sheriff's Dispatch Center and they had to determine where her call originated, based on the receiving tower and other information if the caller was unable to provide it. Then they determine who should be the responding department.  Now, these people are professionals and they can do this quickly, but as an earlier poster said, "seconds save lives".

Now, what I've stated is for 911 hang-ups and people in distress that don't know where they are. The best advice I have is to know your location at all times.  Pay attention to road names, crossroads, mile markers if on the freeway, etc.

If you think about it,  lot of college students are from out-of-state and they have their home area codes and numbers with their phones!  This can be a problem!

Wow--great job by Ms.

Wow--great job by Ms. Andrews!  I hope the woman recovers and her "husband" rots in jail.

I am sure that she does a

I am sure that she does a great job every day as all 911 dispatchers do.  These dispatchers have to be on their toes every second while on the job as do the police officers but they are overlooked.  They have to be able to help however the caller needs, instructing CPR over the job is one example.  The earlier post is correct, she should be rewarded for going the extra mile instead of giving up, GREAT job.

I use to work with Monica

I use to work with Monica years ago at WCSD and she struggled to learn and make a new career for herself.  Since that time she has moved on and I think is a great asset to a profession that is definitely overlooked and taken for granted.  Not everyone is cut out for a job such as Disatching.  Monica has shown that by taking the job seriously and being able to listen she can make a difference no matter how small a difference it can be.  I am very proud of Monica and even prouder to be able to call her My Friend.  Good Luck and keep up the excellent work.  Dispatchers all over the world are proud of you.
