Sell has season-high game at Deerfield

Clinton’s Emily Sell (r) recorded a season high 28-points against Britton-Deerfield. The Redskins won the contest 73-52.

Clinton’s varsity girls basketball team was on top of its game at Deerfield on Thursday, Jan, 29, and defeated Britton-Deerfield 73-52 to remain undefeated at 12-0 overall and 9-0 in the TCC.

The Redskins outscored the Patriots in every quarter. B-D held its own in the opening quarter and went to the second quarter down by just five at 19-14.

By the end of the first half, the Patriots had 10 points to make up to tie the game with Clinton outscoring their opponents 16-11.

Clinton secured the win with an 18-point third quarter and a 20 point fourth quarter. B-D scored 27 points to finish out the game.

Emily Sell had a season high 28 points and also ripped down 12 rebounds for Clinton. Hannah Payne was also in double figures with 15 points and she also grabbed 12 rebounds. Payne led Clinton in steals with five and finished with six assists. Kelsey Karapas chipped in eight points, three assists and four steals.

“It was a good game for us,” said Clinton coach Bart Bartels. “It was a very hostile environment and it got a little chippy. We will use this game as a learning tool in a variety of ways. It's good preparation for some of our upcoming games.”

B-D’s Monique Pollock led the Redskins in her first game of the season with 11 points, four boards and three assists. Jenna Squires went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line and totaled 10 points. Stephanie Frank added seven points and four rebounds. Anna Burnor finished with five points and 14 rebounds.

Clinton recorded a convincing 60-36 win over Whiteford on Friday, Jan 26. The skins jumped out to a 16-10 first quarter lead and extended that to 13 points (31-18) at the half.

Payne had another great game, leading the Redskins in scoring with 16 points and steals with five. Sell had 15 points and cleaned the glass for eight boards. Haley Mercy dished out a team best six assists to go along with six points.

On Monday at Ida, Clinton suffered its first loss of the season, falling 73-60 against the Bluestreaks in non-conference play.

After a tight 14-13 opening quarter, with Ida leading, the Bluestreaks attacked the net for 24 second quarter points while limiting the ‘Skins to just 10. Ida then outscored Clinton 20-14 in the third and held them down the rest of the game to secure the victory.

“The better team won,” said coach Bartels. “We couldn't stop them on offense. They are a tremendously good shooting team.  There's a reason they are 14-0.”

Brooke Scheffler led the Redskins with 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting and also grabbed eight boards. Haley Mercy poured in 15 points with two three-pointers while Hannah Payne chipped in 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds, had three steals and three assists. Emily Sell hauled down eight boards and dished out five assists while Kelsey Karapas scored eight points, all in the fourth quarter. She also added three assists.  

The loss puts the Redskins at 12-1 overall. Clinton remains undefeated in the TCC at 9-0.  This Friday the Redskins we host Madison’s Trojans.

The Patriots faced the Morenci on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and lost 76-39.

Burnor led B-D with 11 points and 17 boards. Senior Captains Jenna Squires added eight points and five rebounds while Kelsey Cousino had seven points, seven rebounds and four assists.
