Tecumseh Schools offer ‘great programs’ for preschoolers

To the Editor,

During this tough economy there is constant talk of programs that have been, or are about to be cut.  So, we want to bring to the attention of our community a couple of great programs that are out there for preschoolers.  These programs are important because they focus on the first five years of a child’s life, which are critical to their future.

First:  Lenawee’s Child. This is a free program for preschoolers that is hosted by Kim Scheerer, affectionately known as Miss Kim.  She runs weekly playgroups at the Board of Education Building (212 North Ottawa Street, Tecumseh).  She does an amazing job of keeping parents informed of children’s activities.  She sends out weekly emails with schedules and updates.  You can get on her mailing list by signing up at playgroup or emailing her at kscheerer@tps.k12.mi.us.

Second:  Tecumseh Public Schools Pre-School Program. This is a tuition based program that is worth every penny.  To fully appreciate just how wonderful this program is we would like to tell you our story.  We have a three-year- old son who was behind in his speech and not well socialized.  We were trying our hardest to help him but nothing seemed to work.  We even went to an expensive speech therapist whose benefit was, well, marginal to say the least.  After hearing good things about the TPS Pre-School Program, we signed him up.  The change in him has been dramatic.  He loves it and we’ve noticed some real benefits:

• He’s more interested in learning
• He’s better behaved – he shares, is more respectful of others, and thinks about his actions
• His speech has improved greatly
• He’s learning to count and is anxious to learn to read
• He’s become more self-sufficient and wants to do everything for himself
We would like to emphasize that we’re good parents.  We read to him every night and spend lots of quality time with him but, he was not developing as well as he might.  Since going to preschool he’s really come along.  We feel that if it wasn’t for this program, our son would likely have required more trips to the speech therapist and undoubtedly would have experienced developmental delays in kindergarten and elementary school.  So, even though we have to pay out-of-pocket for his tuition, we feel like we’re saving time and money in the long run.
Here are some interesting statistics:
• Children are streamlined for school – student alumni (currently K through 2) are testing well ahead of other students in language skills and reading
• It saves taxpayer dollars – the program saves TPS an estimated $1.5 million dollars a year, through early intervention and reduced need for special education later
• It’s self-sustaining – the program does not use any public funds
• It’s low cost – similar programs in other areas cost much more
• The benefits to your child are real and readily apparent
Tecumseh is the only school district in southeast Michigan to offer this type of a comprehensive program. Registration is going on right now.  Checkout their website at:  http://www.tps.k12.mi.us/web/ps.html.

Excellent Commentary

Thank you for your positive editorial.  When the SEAC recommended that Tecumseh Schools and the Tecumseh Community do a better job of marketing the positives within the school system, this was exactly the type of thing we had in mind.

Like all things in life, there are always negatives and they need to be worked on constantly, but during that improvement process, we must also continue to emphasize the positive.  Editorials like this demonstrate the positive - keep up the good work.

Problem is

Often the negatives out weigh the positives. To fix the problems, you can not just state what the positives are. I understand what you are trying to do, but nothing will be fixed by simply saying we are good at this and that. When many people know the negative sides, and see no changes in the leadership.

Make changes to the leadership, within the system and correct some of the things that have gone on for a long time, than tell us just how good the positives are. For anyone NEW to the area or schools will find out quickly the down side to Tecumseh's schools and try to help, by talking and asking why, only to be treated in a way that is not productive to being a second to none school!!! Many parents than over a few years start to wonder why we are sending our kids here, nothing changes.

You can market the positives all you want but if you do not change how the leadership does business than nothing will change overall. You can spend $350,000 on marketing and the reality wont change and people will see it. I think the fact of the poor leadership has really been over looked for reasons why people have chosen to send their kids other places.

It's not just the economy that is a factor here! The city is GREAT it really is, but the school system has many negatives to it, if changes were made internally FIRST, I think most people would say that overall the two are very good, but until than its not going to happen.

Mike, be real...

If the school district named you as a basketball coach tomorrow you would stop your silly B.S and be a supporter. Some people who complain on here really think things out and are speaking from the heart. You are a bitter person because you did not get the basketball job. Stop hiding behind the" I care" thing. Why haven't you been hired anywhere else? You don't even have kids in this school district anymore so stop already.

Mr BobHope!!

It makes me laugh each time someone like you says I am bitter, when in fact I am not at all bitter. However, I would never take the job at Tecumseh with the current leadership in place as it is. For one, not that this was about basketball but you brought it up, No Coach is going to be able to succeed with the current system they have in place, check the records for all of the last four coaches, SAME System, same results! Again time to change the system, the structure and philosophy. But this was not about basketball Mr. Hope.

As for why "I have not been hired by someone else" For one I coach AAU Ball, because I am a full time student. I am glad Tecumseh did not hire me, It would have been to much for me to deal with coaching and school at the same time, I would have has to slack on one of them and it would not have been basketball. There is nothing to be bitter about anymore, my higher education is much more important.

Mr. Hope, I support everyone who sees what is going on in Tecumseh, not once have I criticized anyone for speaking out and wanting better. Can you really sit their and tell me their is not problems with the leadership? All I stated was to fix things, start from with in first make changes, than tell everyone what you have done and make a claim of being the best. This is how it is suppose to be done!

Hiding behind the "I care" thing... Sorry Mr. Hope I am not hiding anything at all, I do care very much so, why because I know many people in Tecumseh and CARE about them! There is nothing Fake here, I am a passionate person who truly does care.

It's easy for you Mr. Hope, to try to state what you think you know, because you were told something, or as if you really know me. So Mr. Hope to also point out something NO one was talking about Basketball in this discussion! My comments were over the leadership in general.

You know yourself that their is problems, and if they made some changes the schools could be as good as the city and truly be the best in the country. But you can not change the negatives by just stating some positives. Are your truly disagreeing with that?

P.S Mr. Hope...... Why don't you try using your real name! And state facts and not your false information. Whether you believe what I have said, it up to you, I am a honest man and do not B.S anyone.

Just to make sure that

People understand, the schools DO have many great things about it, None of my kids had any problems with teachers, in fact they did like all of them and so did I. The teachers work hard and care greatly about the kids and do a great job of teahing the kids. This discussion was never about the teachers. Or Basketball.

I just want people to understand that, and to know what I have refered to as a lack of leadership is the decisions that BOE and the Superentendent have made over the years and creating a "Crisis" for the students.

They, themselves have done thing as we all know that really is not in the best interest of the community, thus now trying to state positives by Paying someone to make a claim. I am all for stating the positives, but when their are things that are not so great make changes from with in and than tell everyone what you have done to be the best.

Have to Agree that Preschool Programs are Wonderful!

Have to say that I agree with Robert Stross and Ann Wann.  My family has also had a wonderful time with the preschool programs that have been offered through Tecumseh Schools!  Miss Kim is a jewel and has been very helpful with developmental suggestions as well as creative planning with playgroup/fieldtrips/speakers.  Playgroup has had numerous fieldtrips which include, visiting downtown businesses, sledding at the pit, Kapnick's Orchard outings and having tea at the British Pantry.  It's a wonderful way for new families as well as old to learn about what Tecumseh has to offer, meet new families, and engage our little ones with play and social activites.  Playgroup also offers regular playing times, large motor play, infant play and kindergarten readiness.  If you haven't experienced a playgroup yet and you have little ones, you really should.  It's beneficial for your children as well as your family.

  THANK YOU MISS KIM!
