Morenci newsman wouldn’t mind devouring a Redskin
To the Editor,
Since Clinton joined the Tri-County Conference athletic league, I’ve had to write about encounters with the Redskins much more than in the past. I always cringe when I use the word “Redskins,” but it makes for a better sports story rather than writing Clinton over and over.
I cringe because to me it’s not much different than calling a team the Little Yellow Men or the Colored Boys.
I’m pleased to report that I found a solution to the dilemma for this winter season. Whenever I write Redskins, I think of the potato.
So it’s all right with me if the Redskins remain the Redskins, as long as that big painting of a Native American man comes down from the gymnasium wall and instead there’s an image of a steaming bowl of redskin potatoes.
That’s a mascot I’ll devour anytime.

Here it goes again
Why don't we just name every school team after a bird or a flower so these pantywaists can write articles about how the "Yellow Finches Devour Pansies in District Play" or "Chickadees Gobble Lavender Lilacs for Crown". That way nobody will get their poor little feelings hurt and the writer doesn't have to 'cringe' while covering a sporting event.
Sick of..
I am sick of the lack of concern that people, such as yourself, show for a group of people who had everything taken from them and the government to this day continues to take from this group.
I doubt you will see beyond your lifetime to agree. I doubt you will see beyond a casino. People, such as yourself, refuse to research and see what this is truly all about. Maybe if someone came to your house and tricked you into giving you a bushel of corn for your land, made you leave, separated, enslaved and sold your family then maybe you'd see. Maybe if you refused to leave your land and you became an outcast in society spit upon, ignored, not allowed to be around white people, not allowed to practice your religion, not allowed to marry whom you please, not allowed to even speak of your ancestry without being jailed or put to death, then maybe you'd see. What is the problem with being a redskin even though we wouldn't dare speak of another race in such a derogatory manner. After all, we should all just rollover just like we did when the white man came and took everything.
It is so easy when we are the ones whose ancestors took the land in the name of "helping". I think of a early seal which depicts a native american with the words "come over and help us" attached to it so that people would feel they were indeed coming to save the "redskins" from themselves. It is so easy when you have freedoms that were not afforded to Native Americans. It is so easy when it isn't your ancestors.
It is always better for some, such as yourself, to take the easy route. The well traveled road of racism, piety and morality. Even if that road leads nowhere, at least it is an easy walk and you'll die before you realize the road lead you nowhere.
Nice One
I want to take this time to say THANK YOU! All to often in this world it is easy to turn a blind eye to issues that effect many or even a few. Thankfully in this world are people who truly do care, and at least advocate for change. Some people however just do not care, or will never change no matter what.
I will admit, sometime ago I have no Idea how the word "redskin" effected anyone or the usage of images for that matter, until we talked about it in one of my Sport Management classes, and in a Sociology class where we had a gust speaker- A Native American! I than went to my first Pow Wow and it was great!
Thank you again for comments!
The road
At least I have lived life on that road instead of wasting one in self pity for things that happened so long ago that nobody has any control over ... What a ride it has been too! I will go to my grave happy, I am sorry for you.
I've never purposely uttered a racist word, unlike yourself and "the white man".
Oh, and for the record, I have never set foot in one of your casinos. YOU made that stement too.
