Art Trail Tecumseh poetry contest deadline extended
We will soon leave reading month behind and enter into April, also known as National Poetry Month. I always look forward to April because of National Poetry Month. Tecumseh is celebrating in its own way by merging the written word with the poetry of sculpture, specifically the sculptures that are part of Art Trail Tecumseh.
There are two contests—one from written poetry and one for spoken word poetry. For the written poetry, poets of all ages are encouraged to write poems inspired by any one of the sculptures and submit them to be judged for a prize. One winner will be chosen in each of three age brackets, 5-12, 13-18 and 19 and older. There is still time to submit poems. The deadline has been extended to Friday, March 26. Poems should be submitted to the Tecumseh District Library, 215 N. Ottawa Street in Tecumseh.
In addition to written poetry, a poetry slam for spoken word and performance is being held Thursday, April 1, at 7 p.m. at the Tecumseh Center For the Arts (TCA), 400 N. Maumee in Tecumseh, with more prizes. Those interested in performing their poetry or reading it can do so in a café-style setting. I attended last year’s event held at the TCA and it was well attended with lots of great poetry, again inspired by the sculptures on Art Trail Tecumseh. Those interested in participating can sign up at the library. There also will be an open mic session after the slam for poets to share all types of poems.
The attached flyer shows the details of the events. I encourage anyone interested in poetry and art to come out and hear what this poetry stuff is all about.
