TV crew shoots film for ‘Best Schools’ program on WXYZ
By DEB WUETHRICH
A film crew from WXYZ Channel 7 News in Detroit visited Tecumseh last Thursday and Friday to tape segments that could air as part of a “Best Schools in Michigan” program later this month. The show is now scheduled to air on April 14 at 8:30 p.m.
The Tecumseh School Board voted in February to retain Sussman and Sikes, a professional marketing firm from Southfield, for $25,000, to help the district with a marketing campaign which included a spot on the “Best Schools in Michigan” program this spring. The school district will be able to utilize DVDs from the film as well as other marketing materials to help promote Tecumseh Public Schools.
On Thursday, film crews, including the show’s producer, Mary Mercado, spent time with Mayor Harvey Schmidt as well as students, parents and educators at some of the district’s elementary schools. On Friday, the crew filmed at Tecumseh High School.
Video also was taken at some athletic practices, a Tecumseh Lenawee’s CHILD program, and in some community neighborhoods.
“We really want to highlight the community because it is a unique place,” said Susan Goldman of Sussman-Sikes. “It has a great lifestyle that people may not be aware of. It’s such a cute town.”
Mercado, from Detroit, said this was her first trip to Tecumseh.
“I was pleasantly surprised,” said Mercado. “I thought I’d been everywhere around our area, but Tecumseh is really a hidden gem.”
At the last Tecumseh School Board meeting, board members announced that the district would host a special viewing of the “Best Schools in Michigan” segment on April 14 in the Tecumseh High School Cafetorium. Student music groups will also provide entertainment for the event, which begins at 7:30 p.m.

Worth it?
Rest easy all you citizens of Tecumseh who have been duped once again by our illustrious school board. I'm sure it will be worth EVERY penny ...
... In fact it will be worth all 2.5 million pennies because we ALL know how many people will be preparing for American Idol by watching an infomercial about schools ...
I know I'm going to be watching just to see if they use the Sham-Wow guy!
Best Schools
Bet they didn't detail all of the arrests, drugs, child pornography, and robberies that have occurred at the high school. Several this year alone.
Hmmm
Sounds like you have some SERIOUS accusations there. Children are in danger. I highly suggest this newspaper contact you with your provided IP Address and sign-on information to pass your name to the authorities. Somebody needs to go to prison ...
... oh, wait ... you don't have facts do you? Just wanted to shock people!
Best Schools?????
Is that why my 15 year old failed 3 out of 4 years in Middle school and was still passed and is now failing his freshmen year also. Should have done school fo choice years ago, but deffinately will next year!!!
Flunking
Maybe a 'real' parent needs to take away the cell phones, computers and Nintendo's and actually FOCUS on education.
Go ahead, move to another district and fail your kid from that one as well.
Brilliance.
Flunking
We have taken all of that away from him so please DO NOT QUESTION MY PARENTING!!!!!!!!!!!
Excuse Freedom
You'll have to excuse Freedom. He's simply won't believe the depth of the problem at the High School and will blame everyone BUT the teachers.
It's people like him that perpetuate the problem instead of helping identify what is really going on.
No Excuses
I surely do not need some pompous brat apologizing for me. When you can stop looking up big words like 'perpetuate' and actually learn to READ the other posts, you will find that I NEVER ONCE said Teachers were blameless. I've only requested you provide some proof with your attacks rather than hearsay ... which you could not. "Ask a child" is not proof. Fortunately for you somebody else finally posted an intelligent response .. you should learn.
Lisa, I do apologize if I offended you, but if you look at your initial post objectively, you left it wide open for that type of assumption. Good luck bringing your child around.
Bias
You too can be considered one of the best schools in Michigan for a mere $25,000! Paid opinions are a great way to obtain your information.
52% of the freshman class
52% of the freshman class are failing at least one class and we're suppose to believe that we're one of the best. The High School is a disaster and until that gets fixed, families will continue to leave this district.
Could you provide the link
Could you provide the link that shows that 52% of the freshman class are failing at least one class? Pretty sad if it is true!
it is true. i do believe the
it is true.
freshman class failing classes
YES! This is true! The principle took time out of the day, important class time!, to drill the students of how poorly the kids in the school are doing. AHHHHHHHHH! Let's not forget, however, that we are the best schools in the state!! WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!!
Link? Come on man. You
Link? Come on man. You know darn well that the school would never publish that.
However, the were stupid enough to call the entire freshman class into a meeting to berate them about this. They were told that 52% were failing at least one class.
Don't believe me, find a HS freshman and ask if they were told this. You'll find out it's true.
Nice job again TPS High School!
Link?
No, the school would probably not post it, a newspaper or other watch group might ... IF IT WERE TRUE ... But NO WORRIES, we have some anonymous poster name "Tecumseh Resident" who is providing us with all these shocking statistics carefully investigated and proven to be factual because he/she "heard them from a H.S. Freshman".
You too can "find a HS freshman" and get your own 'factual data' ... for a mere $19.95 ... just call 1-555-GET-UFAX. Ain't technology great?
This is sad
How sad that THS has that many kids failing. When again do we stop blaming parents/kids for this failure and start putting the blame where it belongs?
Unfortunately, there are
Unfortunately, there are those who feel that the High School teachers bear no blame for this and only want to point fingers at the school board. Folks, some of the teachers at the HS are most definetly a problem (as well as the admin there)! Hopefully this will begin to wake some folks up to what's really going on at the High School.
More drivel from the master.
Nobody, not once, said that the teachers bear no blame. However, you seem to be the ONLY one in posession of these devastating facts and refuse to share your source(s) except to say you know Freshmen kids that came home and told you these numbers. All I can say is, "yeah, right".
The teachers do bear some blame, as does this money-wasting administration .. but so do parents that think their kids can do nothing wrong and, when they do get busted in an illegal activity or having contraband, blame it on the school staff for illegal searches rather than disciplining the kids that did the misdeed in the first place ... sound familiar there Res?
Just like the earlier clown who pops in and claims "child pornography" ... instead of using shock value they need to present their information to the authorities instead of posting anonymously, with zero factual data.
TecRes's constant complaints and bashing of teachers is because his/her kids don't get along with them (anyone doubting, refer to historical posts). One person posting under multiple pseudonyms does NOT constitute a majority. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT if it is so damn bad, your constant and anonymous teacher bashing is getting old. Publicly come forward with FACTS and I'll support you. This subversive snipping is getting nothing accomplished except boring many to death.
I'll sit back now and wait for you to start the namecalling all over again. I so enjoy your wit (sarcasm intended).
Seek theTruth
Quit being part of the problem and seek the truth. All you have to do is ask any Freshmen student.
Also, it's pretty immature to always assume that those who post facts that you don't like are just the same person. You've become a real buffoon.
Check the facts out then check back with an apology.
see!
Can't have a discussion without calling names. Typical.
Problem is you cannot prove these are facts.
The only thing I apologize for is acknowledging your posts again. Vowed I wouldn't do that the last time you started the personal attacks. My bad.
I explained to you how to
I explained to you how to confirm the information. If this issue is important to you, than find a couple of freshman students and ask. If it's not important to you, then simply quit posting.
Yes there was a meeting with Freshman
My child is a Freshman. Yes, my child along with all the Freshman was called to a meeting concerning half the Freshman class is failing at least one course. My child said graphs were shown with all the statistics. The class most being failed was English.
I found this English issue interesting. I have only had one student go through the English at the middle school level. And the 8th Grade English teacher, Mrs. Adams, has outstanding course content. Oh some of it may seem repetitive, but my child is a better writer because of her methods.
And, I agree parents must be involved. Just before mid-term exams and grades were coming out, I emailed each of my child's teachers and asked if there were any areas where my child could improve and expressed to the teacher when my child really enjoyed their class. With a couple of classes, I also expressed some concerns about the organization of some course content and materials that make it difficult to know what information the student should be studied for midterms.
I only received a response from one out of six teachers.
It is frustrating when your student comes home and says I have a test, but I am not clear what material will be covered on the exam or what to study.
Or, these grades have not been entered into the computer so I don't know if they will count on this grading period...or I don't know where I stand in the class because my teacher says there are more grades to go into the computer yet.
Good Info
This is good, substantiated information and not just "my kid told me, so it has to be true" like the other posters. It is obvious you are involved and trying to work through the problems reasonably.
I'm glad we agree that parents need to be more involved and not just contribute to the problem. I have never said Teachers carry no blame in this problen, and you ... with detail ... have shown they need to improve. I hope those in authority are reading this, the unanswered emails to a reasonable request is inexcusable.
You also make an excellent point about the Freshmen students having trouble 'transitioning', and I would be interested to know the percentages from other districts. Thanks for responding with intelligent, detailed information and I hope things work out for your kids.
The fact that I was correct
The fact that I was correct is just killing you. Don't worry, I won't ask you to apologize. Next time, be a little bit less of a suck up and realize that the conditions at the High School are what you want them to be.
As your child continues
As your child continues through HS, be prepared for more of the same, as well as grades not being enetered at all and you child getting the incorrect grade. You should also take note that teachers simply don't want to make time for the parent to have a discussion - principal as well.
Good Luck.
Want the truth?
Why don't the two of you quit your bickering and call the high school, and ask the principal if any of this is true. This may save a lot of us from having to read your back and forth drama.
Fact is, I know it's
Fact is, I know it's true. I have kids in the High School and they told me what happened. I also know Freshmen students that confirmed it.
Freedom should stop pretending that he's concerned about the school district, unless he's willing to accept where the real problems are.
Let's see the video!
Let's see the video online! No one should have to leave their homes to see this video. The school should put it online immediately for everyone to view and get it circulating. What possible point can there be in holding it back? Not that anyone puts any stock in a paid for presentation such as it is. It's done, get out to the public!
The $25,000 is probably worth the investment...
TPS have been losing kids to school of choice for the last half-decade.
Everytime a student leaves, this hits the school district with $6,700 less in state funds.
If this marketing scheme nets a total of 3.5 students coming back to the district, it breaks even. That is a good bet.
Good Bet?
It is a good bet that more than 3.5 students will be pulled from Tecumseh schools due to the consistently arrogant decisions of the BOE!
