Sturgis wins Tecumseh Invitational

Tecumseh’s varsity gymnastics team placed seventh at its sixth annual invitational on Saturday while Sturgis picked up the first place trophy.The Indians scored 105.1 points while Sturgis totaled 129.725. Adrian placed second with a score of 127.125 while Saline was third with 125.325.Indian junior Erin Landstrom and senior Tori Thacker each kicked off the season with regional qualifying scores on vault. Landstrom scored 7.9 on vault while Thacker scored 8.150.Tecumseh has four returning seniors this year including Thacker, Kyia Salts, Jenna Warner and Courtney Mollette.“All four are going to be a strong part of the team,” said Tecumseh coach Jenni Poston.Salts competes on vault, bars and beam while Mollette does vault and floor. Mollette had a knee injury last season and is working her way into additional routines.Tecumseh had two compete in the all-around. Thacker totaled 25.225 points in the all-around while Warner had a score of 22.000.Adrian sophomore Nicole Fischhoff placed first in the all-around competition with a score of 35.000.Also competing on vault for Tecumseh were sophomore Jillian Travis (7.650), Salts (7.5) and Warner (7.4).Tecumseh freshman Sarah Kelly led Tecumseh on bars with a score of 5.7 while Salts followed with 4.850. Tecumseh sophomore Leigh Kapnick scored 4.350, Warner, 3.250 and Thacker, 3.150. Salts scored 7.150 on beam while sophomore Jillian Travis totaled 6.950. Thacker totaled 6.8, freshman Lauren Chapman, 6.050 and Warner, 5.350.Thacker led the Indians on floor with a score of 7.125 while Travis scored 7.200. Landstrome scored 7.375 on floor: Travis, 7.200; Thacker, 7.125; Kelly, 7.100 and Warner, 6.000.Last year, the Indians had a couple of record setters in Chelsea Caterina and Brea Tomford but the team finished its season with an average, middle-of-the-road, record. This season Poston feels the team may have a stronger finish.“They have some big shoes to fill,” said Poston. “But I think they’re ready to fill them. This is a more well-rounded team.”Tecumseh competes next after the holiday break at Adrian on Jan. 10.
