TPS educator lauds local community, school district
To the Editor,
School starts on Sept. 7, and I, for one, can’t wait! This will be my 28th year as an educator within the Tecumseh Public School system. I feel fortunate to work for TPS and honored to have an opportunity to work with students who have been raised in such a great community. I am particularly proud this coming school year because of Tecumseh’s recent accolades in the area of student achievement.
Did you know that each school in Tecumseh’s district received an A grade for student achievement and academic growth on No Child Left Behind’s report card? The federal No Child Left Behind Act requires that Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) be calculated for all public schools, and for each school district. The school district must attain the target achievement goal in reading and mathematics or reduce the percentage of students in the non-proficient (basic and apprentice) category of achievement by 10 percent. Tecumseh has achieved all these standards.
Did you know that Tecumseh Middle School outperformed every middle school in the county with a ranking of 89.2 percent? We were listed as one of the schools that is excelling! This information was recently made public by the Michigan Department of Education.
One last fact that I think we should celebrate is the fact that Tecumseh High School has the highest ACT scores of Lenawee County’s public schools
I have no doubt that each and every child who enters the doors of Tecumseh Public Schools this fall will have the ability and opportunities to excel. How lucky we are to live in such a great community with such a great school district!
Have a great Year!
Mary L. Tommelein

It's because of teachers
It's because of teachers like you Mary! I wish all teachers were as enthusastic and loved their job as much as you. I'm grateful my kids get to experience you in there school careers! Thank you, Mary!
I know this question has nothing to do with the article
But why has Tecumseh Posted the AD position when we all know who it is going to! They waste time by posting these positions when they already have the person they are going to give it too. It is just for show, they have done this for a long time.
The positions ALWAYS go to a buddy (someone from the inside), who is always deemed better qualified then outsiders who meet the same qualifications and apply for the position. Anyone without a inside connection to get the job with the qualifications for the position will in almost every case be told they do not meet some subjective qualification.
Perhaps they do this to maintain the system and beliefs they have carried out for many years now, would never want someone to come in a do what is right for these athletic positions. I guess, I just have higher expectations and ethics then this.
Lets Hear It.
Michael, Lets hear your prediction. If your right, then there may be some substance to your claim. Don't wait until the decision has been made and then yell "I TOLD YA SO!" Lets hear who it obviously is going to be. Looking forward to your prediction.
@Raisin River Rat
I have to apologize, I did not see this request before today and really can not make my prediction now as I think the person has been named in a different post. However I really thought it would be Mensing, He seemed the logical choice to me but is not the person so I am told.
I am big enough to say I was wrong! It just seemed to me and some others that he would be the logical choice.
tired of the same old song
If parents knew how Mary Tommelien really treated their children, they wouldn't be so quick to hold her so far above the rest of us.
The students/families with the right last names and the ones who live in the right areas of Tecumseh have to give thanks to her. For those students, she does the job. For the rest of us, too bad. "Hope you manage to struggle through your educational experience" is the message our students/families receive.
FYI: She isn't a teacher, she is a counselor.
TPS
Mary Tommelien does as good a job as the next public school official, I have no problems with her personally. But I agree with Lois on how they (TPS) treat certain families and don't be fooled by how 'well' they claim the students are doing. TPS is great at 'running out' students that are labeled 'difficult'. So of course their No Child Left Behind crap is doing good - the program is a joke anyhow. We had a terrible experience with TPS - they are the reason we school at home now! Thank you TPS my children are FINALLY learning!
Social Problems
I'm sure your children and their social problems have nothing to do with it either.
@ Lois and Blessed Mother of 3
Thank you both for your comments! I understand what you both are saying very well. I DO know however their are some good teachers who do love to teach and do a very good job of doing so. But their are major draw backs also.
The thing is when you have a valid problem and you voice that problem you are made to feel that you are stupid, not a team player and are black balled. They never answer the problem, however they like to resort to finding other things and make statements on that.
How many people have left the district? How many of them all have the same feelings? I am not sure but are they all wrong? See most of us do not hate Tecumseh, we would rather try to make change for the better, a reform from the old way.
Please
Black balled? Valid Problem? That you were not picked as a basketball coach..that is your problem.Mike,Please stop acting as if you are the "spokesperson" for Tecumseh. You get on any negative about TPS and drag it out...you took your kids to Adrian and they are doing well,I am happy for you....and them. But please stop with the B/S and stop hiding behind the " I said there were good teachers" or "I think Mensing, Mills, etc are good people they are poor leaders. What exactly are your credentials to be runnig off at the mouth...you coached a little AAU and you are an expert? I watched you coach at Tecumseh and you are more impressed with yourself than anyone else was/is. Focus your expertise on Adrian now....I am sure with your vast credentials they ahve created a basketball position for you...how could they not utilize you...they would be crazy not to.
@Bob Hope
Mr. Hope
First you do not even know me to judge, and how dare you try to state what my intentions are. Everything I have ever said is 100% true, from the heart. My problem is about the system of hiring coaches not just the fact that I was not hired. This process is wrong no matter where you go, it is not just Tecumseh. I am not hiding behind anything; I am not sitting here making statements that are untrue.
What people like you can not do is dispute facts, rather you can use the he has a grudge attitude to cover up what is going on. Your comments show you have no Idea of who I am, you do not know my credentials, by background, however you can read and pull statements and in return make another untrue comment.
You say "I watched you coach at Tecumseh and you are more impressed with yourself than anyone else was/is" I guess first you can speak for everyone else right. Second: to be clear (I know you will not understand) I never coached at Tecumseh, if you really knew what was going on, I was never allowed to lead, never allowed to strengthen the system. WHY Mr. Hope? People wanted it done their way!
If you were honest Mr. Hope you would also say that, that year was a disaster created by those in charge not by me... Also you would should realize (seeing you were watching) that when I took a increase leadership role things went much better. Look back at any of the games where this happened and you will see. But No Mr. Hope you won’t make that observation however you will say
anything against the facts. Do not take my word on this ask the person who was the JV coach that year, If he was honest he would say the same thing.
However Mr. Hope, I am not an arrogant person, however I will defend myself when people like you make incorrect statement. SO Mr. HOPE why don't you stop hiding behind a fake name and let everyone know who you are!
Why don't you try understanding the true problem here and then try to have a educated discussion on that topic, seeing after all this is what I am trying to do. You won’t do that will you? No you would rather make things about something they are not.
It is easy to not give a crap about how I feel, seeing it does not affect you, but I am sure if for some reason in a similar situation it did, you would not have the same attitude. So how dare you try to discredit my true feelings of the nature of this hiring practice and it being wrong and unethical? I will not sit here and turn a blind eye to the facts of this being wrong, what will that do? That’s not what leaders do, Leaders who are ethical that is.
Come on Mr. Hope defend my questions! Why the system of hiring only teacher is’s right? What makes them better suited? Why is it ethical to do so? Why do you just sit and go along with what they tell you and not question it?
I await your answers, because sport research does not back up the answers that many have provided.
P.S thanks Mr. Hope for doing just what I said on my post to Louis and Blessed Mother of 3.......... "They never answer the problem; however they like to resort to finding other things and make statements on that.
