Tecumseh wins regional title

By MICKEY ALVARADOA grand slam homerun by Tecumseh’s Jacob Britt sparked the Indians’ to a 16-1 three-inning mercy ruled varsity baseball win over Jackson Parma-Western in the MHSAA Division 2 regional championship at Chelsea on Saturday, June 11.Tecumseh senior Jake Moore picked up the pitching win. It was the Indians’ first regional title victory in the last 30 years (1981), and the first for head coach Tom Bullinger who’s been with the Indians for the past five seasons. Bullinger’s teams have advanced to the regional final twice (2007-08) before but lost by just one run both times.“Once Jake Britt hit that dinger with the bases loaded it set the table. Hitting is contagious and they showed it today,” said Tecumseh coach Tom Bullinger. “Nobody wanted to make that last out and the ball was hit hard and they were aggressive. It was exciting and fun.”The Indians loaded the bases right off the bat in the championship final when Britt unloaded on a ball and sent it soaring more than 365’ over the center field fence. He said he loves fast pitches and swung at the first one he saw, the first pitch. His mother deserves some credit. She was out shagging balls for her son earlier in the morning during a pre-game practice.Adding two-run home runs were Moore (2-for-2) and Matt Napieralski (3-for-3, 3 runs, 4 RBI).Also helping the Indians total 14 hits were Stephen Bilotta (2-for-3, 2 runs, double), Max Patterson (1-for-2, 3 RBI) and Kyle Hooper (2-for-2, double, 3 runs).“With the weather being better we’ve been practicing on defense and I think we’ve done a good job with that,” said Bullinger. “Our pitchers aren’t afraid to throw strikes because they know our defense is going to be there for them and they really have the last couple of weeks.”Moore agreed to pitch just minutes before the championship game because he’d had tendonitis but said he was feeling fine and ready to take to the hill again.“We’re just going to keep this momentum rolling,” he said. “We’re getting hot at the right time.”Tecumseh senior Stephen Bilotta (7 ip, 1 hit, 1 K, 1 BB) pitched the Indians’ to a 5-0 shutout against Gibraltar-Carlson in the opening regional contest. The Indians scored a pair of runs in the third inning and added another in the sixth inning. Tecumseh scored the game’s final two runs in the top of the seventh innings.Britt (2 for 4, double, RBI), Brendan Diroff (1 for 2, 2 runs, inside the park HR) and Hooper (1 for 2, RBI) led Tecumseh’s offense. The Indians improved to 23-12 overall with the wins.
