Indians fourth, Thomas second MHSAA state golf tournament

Tecumseh’s varsity boys golf team ended its season on Saturday, June 18, with a fourth place finish in the Division 2 state golf championship tournament at Forest Akers East at Michigan State University.Bobby Thomas led the Indians, finishing tied for second place individually. He shot 2-under-par with 70 on Friday, June 17, and concluded his season with a round of 73. Thomas’ two-day 143 total tied him with Bryan Vanderberg of Richland Gull Lake and Chris Noble of Niles for second place overall. The trio finished just two shots behind individual state champion Griffin Smith (141) of Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook.DeWitt won the team state championship with a score of 586 while Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook placed second with 603. The Indians carded 611 during the two-day event, finishing just two strokes behind third place Clio. Big Rapids finished fifth with a score of 615: Spring Lake, sixth, 618; East Grand Rapids, seventh, 623; New Boston Huron, eighth, 624; Richland Gull Lake, ninth, 624; and Ada Forest Hills Eastern, 10th, 630. Rounding out the top 15 places were Dexter (631), South Lyon, (631), Auburn Hills Avondale (631), Niles (654) and Croswell-Lexington (647).Tecumseh’s Joe Forest carded a total of 153, shooting 73 on day one and 80 the next. Collin Smith recorded a two-day total of 156 (76-80) for the Indians while Zach Campbell shot 159 (83-76). Tecumseh’s Hunter Cadmus carded a total of 180 (94-86).Thomas held a 9-hole average of 38.5 and an 18-hole average of 76. In addition of his second place finish at state, Thomas was in the regional Top 5 (74), made the Parma Western Invitational All-Tournament team (80), medaled at the county tournament (73), the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Tournament (75) and the Tecumseh Invitational (75). He was also on the Maple Invitational All-Tournament team (75).Forrest carried a 9-hole average of 39.1 and an 18-hole average of 77.8. He made the Maple Invitational All-Tournament team (74), was in the Top 10 of the county tournament (75) and was a district medalist (76).Smith made the Tecumseh Invitational All-tournament team (80) and was Top 10 in the county tournament.Campbell was on the Maple Invitational All-Tournament team (79), a runner-up at the SEC tournament (75), Top 10 in the county tournament (73), and on Parma Western’s All-Tournament team (80).
