A shiny new Division 3 state championship trophy will be placed in a dusted off spot in Clinton High School’s trophy case as varsity softball coach Al Roberts and his lady Redskins finally picked up a Michigan High School Athletic Association state championship with a 4-2 victory against Frankenmuth today in Battle Creek.

Clinton junior pitcher Tierney Nelson was almost untouchable until the final inning of the championship when the Eagles loaded the bases and scored two runs on their second double of the inning. Nelson and the Redskins recorded a heart-wrenching 1-0 loss against Allen Park Cabrini last year in the state semifinal so she wasn’t about to go through that experience again. With runners at second and third base and one out recorded, Nelson settled down and struck out Frankenmuth’s final two batters to pick up the state title win.

The Redskins lost just one game this year (to Plymouth-Canton), finishing 35-1 overall with a state title. See next week’s Tecumseh Herald for complete results.
