Go Green with Me

Okay, I'm not a tree hugger. I confess that I have my doubts about global warming. (Am I the only one who remembers the warnings of the coming ice age from the 1970s?) But even a conservative Christian such as myself knows that we need to take care of the earth. Global warming or no, we shouldn't be carelessly polluting our land, our air, and our water. We need them! Going green is a huge step in that direction.

It would have been very hard to change all my habits at once. What I have found is that changing one or two small things at a time is virtually painless. Plus, I feel good knowing I'm doing something positive to make my world a better place. It doesn't have to be expensive. There are things we can do that will actually save money. There are the obvious – turn off lights not in use, turn the thermostat higher (summer) or lower (winter), and keep our car tires properly inflated to increase gas mileage. My car and my furnace also both run more efficiently with a clean filter. Vinegar, baking soda, and salt can replace many cleaners in our homes. (I use vinegar instead of fabric softener and as a rinse aid in my dishwasher). Recycling is free here in Tecumseh and Raisin Township, and all we need is 1-3 bags or bins to toss our recycling into until we can get there (back of the blue building behind Raisin Township office on Occidental) to drop off our plastics, cans, glass and paper products. This is actually saving me on my garbage bill, because now we put out one or two bags of garbage a week instead of three or four. The Tecumseh District Library is a wonderful source to find out about going green. They have lots of books about it. Also, kudos to the library for going green, and thanks for the household battery recycling (drop off for free during the month of August, plus get $1.00 credit toward library fines).
