Brian Matthew Hay

Brian Matthew Hay, recently of Clinton, Mich., passed away on January 12 of complications following emergency surgery at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Brian will be remembered for his gregarious, dedicated and independent nature. He was born in Howell MI on June 16, 1958 and grew up in Ann Arbor (Abbott, Forsythe, Community High schools) where he will be missed by a large circle of family, friends and associates. He was a talented, life-long adventurer who lived for many years in the Virgin Islands as a boat builder and skipper of a sailing schooner; and as a skilled woodworker, craftsman and indispensable crew member (film, stage, sailing, construction) in New Orleans, La., Los Angeles and Carpinteria, Calif.
Brian will be deeply missed by his mother, Carol Hay, to whom he gave loving, daily care for the past three years. He leaves behind his sisters and brother; Beth, Kevin and Anita (Bill Ransom) Hay. He was a fond uncle to his nieces and nephews; Javan Makhmali and Alana DeRiggi and their children, Lucia and Leonard; Taraneh (Makhmali) and Nick Breisacher and their son, Jacob; Gus and Flora Hay. Brian was preceded in death by his father, Alan Hay, who was one of his biggest heroes. He will be remembered by caring relatives and the  many friends he made easily near and far.
Brian’s family is grateful for the excellent care he was given by the medical staff at St. Joe’s who attended to him through-out his long hospitalization during the covid pandemic when visits by family and friends were prohibited. A memorial service will be planned when possible at a future date. In lieu of gifts or flowers, donations to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless near you would be most appreciated.
