Charles Jerome “Jerry” O’Brien

Charles Jerome “Jerry” O’Brien, age 88 of Tipton passed away on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021 at Lynwood Manor. Jerry was born June 22, 1933 in Milton, Fla., the son of the late Percy B. and Elberta M. (Perkins) O’Brien. On January 9, 1953 at the Methodist Church in Tecumseh, he married Diane Jeanne Winfield and they have shared 68 years together.

Jerry graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1951. He went to work for the Tecumseh Products Company in 1952, retiring in 1995 after 43 years of service. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Jerry was a member of the Tecumseh United Methodist Church and a youth leader at the church. He was a member of the Tecumseh American Legion, the Lenawee Conservation League, past president of the Tecumseh Indian Fan Club, and taught photography at the high school. He was active in the Boy Scouts as a Boy Scout Master and advisor. Jerry was an avid woodcarver and loved fly fishing and being up north at his cabin.

Besides his wife, Diane, Jerry is survived by his children, Calleen (George) Troyer of Tecumseh, Maureen (Shawn) Dalton of Goodrich, Ariz., Michael (Amy) O’Brien of Belleville, Patrick (Michele) O’Brien of Oak Creek, Wis. and Timothy (Samantha) O’Brien of Tecumseh; sister, Carole Gemmill of Spring Hill, Fla.; brother, Larry (Dorothy) Harper of Tecumseh; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Deming and infant sister, Clara Marie.

Visitation for Jerry will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 1, from 4-7 p.m. at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Tecumseh United Methodist Church with Rev. William Face officiating with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of the Tecumseh American Legion Post #34 and VFW Post #4187. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tecumseh United Methodist Church or the Lenawee Conservation League. Online condolences may be offered to the family at handlerfuneralhomes.com.
