Robert Erich (Bob) Scheytt

Robert Erich (Bob) Scheytt, age 81, of Tecumseh, Mich., passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021 with his family by his side at the Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Fla. He was born on January 23, 1940 in Royal Oak, Mich., son of late George Frederick and Erna Helene (Zimmermann) Scheytt. On January 27, 1961 in Napoleon, Mich. Bob married the love of his life, Bonnie Jean Sweezey, and shared 60 wonderful years together.

He was a Vietnam veteran and served his country with the U.S. Army Military stationed in Korea 1963-1965 and was a member of the Tecumseh VFW. He retired from the Fisher Body plant of General Motors after 25 years. Bob was a genuine man, a man of his word, someone you looked up to, and someone who wouldn’t hesitate to offer a hand in need. He was a thrifty engineer that spent most of his time in the garage restoring old cars, mostly corvettes, attending swap meets, car shows, drag races, and wrenching on race cars.

He was an avid NASCAR and NHRA fan that never missed a broadcasting. Racing was in his heart and with his love for speed and power he founded the record breaking “Scheytt Racing Team” with his two sons and granddaughter. With consistency, hard work, determination, and his famous words, “Ready, Clear, Fire,” he built a family racing legacy.  He was honored as a Legendary Crew Chief at West Michigan Sand Way.

He spent the remainder of his time with his wife by his side. He loved wearing comfy pants and sitting by a warm campfire filled with joy and laughter at his favorite place “Up North” at Silver Lake. He was very Proud of his sons, he loved his family very much, and most of all he loved his life.

Along with his wife, Bonnie, Bob is survived by his sons, Robert Scheytt of New Hudson, Mich. and Scott Scheytt of Adrian, Mich.; a sister, Irene Karapas of Clinton, Mich.; four grandchildren, Samantha Scheytt, Brandon (Lindsey) Knight, Jacob Knight, and Erica (Jacob) Jackowski, all of Tecumseh, and eight great-grandchildren, Evianna Enderes, Ethan Tabbert, Ryan Knight, Aiden Achtenberg, Faelina Knight, Joseph, Joshua, and Jeremiah Jackowski, all of Tecumseh. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by nephew, Joe Martin and a brother-in-law, Nick Karapas.

Visitation for Bob will be on Friday, Nov. 19, from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes. A graveside service will take place on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Clinton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tecumseh VFW.
