Velma Leona Brown

Velma Leona Brown, age 100, of Tecumseh passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at Fieldstone Assisted Living with family by her side. She was born November 26, 1921 in Milan, a daughter of the late John M. and Elizabeth Mary (Dawson) Norris. On August 7, 1948 in Dundee, she married Clarence Arthur Brown, they shared 53 years together until his death on February 26, 2001.

Velma’s faith in the Lord was very important to her. She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Britton for over 50 years, teaching Sunday school, vacation bible school, and was part of the women’s quilting group. Velma began her teaching career at the age of 18 in a one-room school house. After many years of teaching, she finished her career at Milan Public Schools after 25 years before retiring in 1980. Velma and her husband spent many years traveling across America and Europe. She enjoyed spending time in her garden, canning and freezing what she grew. She enjoyed watching baseball, especially the Detroit Tigers, and she was an avid fiction reader. She loved her family and her church family.

Velma is survived by her daughters, Diane (Terry) Perkins of Gladwin, Bonnie Peters of Clinton, Irene (Dennis) Brock of Milan and Linda Brown of Canton; four grandchildren, Annie Brock of Ann Arbor, Christa (John) Klyder of Monroe, Paul (Jeannie) Peters of Tecumseh and Mark (Alexandra) Peters of Newport, Vt.; seven great-grandchildren, Henry, Wyatt, Jakob, Branton, Emily, Christa and John.  Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Visitation for Velma will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, May 20 at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Britton with Pastor Dave McCarty officiating with visitation from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery in Tecumseh.  Memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Online condolences may be offered to the family at handlerfuneralhomes.com.
