Amstutz to become new Utilities Superintendent
By DEB WUETHRICH
A seasoned City of Tecumseh employee is scheduled to take the helm of the Utilities Department beginning May 9. Todd Amstutz, who has been with the department since July of 1988, has accepted the position and was confirmed by Tecumseh City Council members on Monday night. The starting annual wage for the position will be $61,500 and is an “at will” position. Following Monday night’s approval, Amstutz will now serve in a training capacity with current superintendent, Mike Bearinger, who is retiring.
“We have been pretty much working together for the past couple of years anyway,” Amstutz said. Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch reported that Amstutz progressed through a rather lengthy interview process. “He meets all the requirements of the position and I’m very happy to recommend him to you for this position,” Welch said. Amstutz’ qualifications included enrollment in special outside classes and training programs to earn several State required licensing needs for the Water and Wastewater Treatment plant, holding a Class B Wastewater License, D2 Waterworks System Operator License and a S1 Waterworks System Operator License, along with other prerequisites.
Amstutz takes the lead role at a time when a $2 million tertiary treatment project is underway, with upgrades required by the state’s Department of Environmental Quality.
“I love a challenge,” Amstutz said. “I think it will be a smooth transition.” He said that there are still a couple more approvals required on the project, but construction already is under way with the foundation having been completed. The project should be complete this spring, he said.
“He’s going to do great and I don’t foresee anything changing,” said Bearinger of his replacement. “He will do a great job and has got lots of years in with the city.”
