The Britton Deerfield Board of Education held a special meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 25. The agenda for the meeting detailed a counselor opening at the high school, the Britton Deerfield Education Association (BDEA)’s contract negotiations, and to consider accepting a separation agreement and release for Charles Pelham, superintendent for Britton Deerfield schools.

Board members went into closed session twice during the meeting. The first closed session was to discuss BDEA contract negotiations. Upon reconvening in open session, the board unanimously accepted a tentative agreement with the BDEA.

The second closed session was to consider accepting a separation agreement and release for Charles Pelham. Pelham requested a closed executive session to discuss the agreement. Board member Kevin Barrett Sr. made a motion to accept the retirement and separation of Supt. Pelham in accordance with his signed agreement. The motion passed 6-0. Pelham will serve as superintendent until November 30, at which time an interim superintendent will be appointed. Board President Todd Ost said that Pelham was in the final year of his contract with Britton Deerfield, and was instrumental in helping the districts through the difficult consolidation process. He added that the board wishes him a long and happy retirement.

“He’s been in education for forty years and that’s the reason I say he chose to accept to retire,” Ost said. “I received the impression that he had interests beyond education he wished to pursue. We wish him all the best.”

Ost declined comment on whether there were other reasons influencing Pelham’s retirement.

In other board action, members made note that there will be two position openings at the high school at the end of December. They discussed gathering an interview team and suggested posting openings for the positions at the end of the meeting. One of the positions is for counseling, while the other opening was not specifically identified.
