Free HIV testing to be offered at SHU on December 1

Do you know as of September 2015 approximately 18,800 individuals in Michigan are affected with HIV/AIDS?
For the fourth year, I have had the privilege to volunteer with HARC/APM(HIV-AIDS Resource Center/AIDS Partner-ship Michigan) at Siena Heights University. HARC/APM is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to provide HIV-related services to the community through compassionate direct care, prevention and outreach activities.
On December 1, 2015 Worlds AIDS Day, HARC/APM staff will offer free, anonymous HIV testing in Adrian from 6 to 9 p.m. at Siena Heights University Dominican Hall, Rooms 115 and 116. The testing is open to all of the Lenawee County community. This is the only way you can get tested free and anonymously without a physician’s order in Lenawee County.
Here are some facts that are eye-opening to me and may be to others in the community. Youth between the ages of 13-24 make up 33 percent of the 18,800 living with HIV/AIDS in Michigan. The Detroit Metro area make up 12,240 of those 18,000. Youth as young as 13 years of age can be tested without a parents or guardians consent.
The Lenawee County Health Department offer free condoms, but they do ask for a $1 donation, and encourage people to come by and get supplies. They hope citizens will use them and enhance all the prevention opportunities. The Health Department is located at 1040 S. Winter St., Suite 2328.
I would like to give a special thanks to Siena Heights University for letting HARC use their facilities. I also want to thank Leon Golson from HARC/APM for providing the testing, WLEN radio, Sharron (Siena Heights Campus Nurse), Lisa and Susie (Lenawee County Health Dept.) for helping me get the word out to others in the community.
