Pastors oppose guidelines to allow students choice of bathrooms

To the Editor,

As pastors and religious leaders in this community we would like to take a moment and draw your attention to something that is happening in our state at this time.

The Michigan State Board of Education (SBOE) is currently drafting guidelines that would allow students, regardless of parental input, to choose their gender, name, pronouns and bathrooms. The policy says:

• “School staff should address students by their chosen name and pronouns that correspond to their gender identity.”

• “Transgender and gender nonconforming students have the right to decide when, with whom, and to what extent to share private information.” (That includes parents.)

• “Students should be allowed to use the restroom in accordance with their gender identity.” (The same is true for locker rooms and sports teams.)

This will become the official policy of the SBOE, which will be implemented in schools all across our state.

We accept the authority of scripture as our standard, which states in Gen. 1:27:

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Jesus reaffirms this in Mark 10:6.)

We believe the Creator in His sovereignty determines our gender identity, not we the created according to our own feelings or personal choice.

We believe this will have very negative and far-reaching effects on our families, children and society, and we strongly oppose this based on the authority of scripture.

Finally, no modification of this policy is acceptable as it is fundamentally flawed.

We urge you to speak up now and let your voice be heard by going to www.everyvoicecountsMI.org and stating your objection to this policy by the SBOE. Time is running out. The discussion board will be closed on May 11.
