Redskins blocked in District play
When a team is knocked out of district varsity girls basketball action it's usually the end of the road, however Clinton's season was extended into the post-season where it clinched the Tri-County Conference title outright.
Ice and snow cancelled the Redskins' regular season game against Whiteford on Tuesday, Feb. 12, and it was made up three days after visiting Gabriel Richard handed the Redskins a 51-38 loss in the second round of District play on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
Knowing full well their season was all but over and sole possession of the TCC title was on the line, the Redskins solidly defeated Whiteford 74-45 to end their season.
“These girls accomplished a lot this year and they should be proud of how far they've come and how well they've played as a team all year,” commented Coach Ruhl.
Clinton (18-4, 14-2 TCC) senior Laura Heinz led the Redskins with 18 points while Bianca Peters added 16 points; Grace Walter, 12 points; Carmin Herrst and Colleen Zimmerman, eight points each; Grace Walter, seven points; Emily Sell, three points and Sadie Brown, one point.
In their district game against Gabriel Richard, the Redskins were slow to the net and turned the ball over nine times in the first quarter. After finishing the quarter down 17-5, the Redskins went to the half needing to make up 10 points with the fighting Irish leading 28-18.
Heinz pulled the Redskins to within eight points (28-20) early in the third quarter but Richard quickly pushed up its lead to 10 points once again. Erin VanWasshnova answered right back with a netter from the field but the Fighting Irish scored seven unanswered points to take a 37-24 lead into the final quarter.
Colleen Zimmerman hit the hoop with 2:49 remaining in the contest and cut Richard's lead to just six points (42-36). Richard went to the free throw line and connected on two shots and followed with a netter from the field to increase its leads back to double digits. The Fighting Irish went on to score another five points before Clinton's Herrst scored the final basket of the game.
Zimmerman led Clinton’s scoring with 11 points while Heinz added 10 points and nine rebounds. Carmin Herrst chipped in seven points for Clinton and added five rebounds, two steals and two assists.
