Sylvia J. Yeary

Sylvia Jean (Golat) Yeary, age 87, of Tecumseh, Mich. went home to be with her Lord and Savior on January 4, 2024 following a long battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Sylvia was born on March 31, 1936 in Conrath, Wis. to Edward and Jean (Novak) Golat. She moved to Tecumseh in 1938 where she resided for the rest of her life. She graduated from Tecumseh High School with the class of 1954. On October 22, 1956 she married Shelva Yeary in Tazewell, Tenn. and they shared 59 years together. Sylvia worked as a secretary for Tecumseh Public Schools for 23 years.

Sylvia has been a long-term member of various Southern Baptist churches in the local area, assisting in the organization and start-up of these churches. She taught Sunday School for over 50 years and especially cherished the years she taught consecutive grades with her close friend, Luann Stewart. Sylvia loved gardening, traveling throughout the United States and Europe and gathering with friends at the Daily Grind or The Dog House.  She was a proud member of the Lenawee County Retired School Personnel.

Sylvia is survived by her two children, Edward (Beth Burkhard) Yeary of Clinton, Mich. and Pamela Yeary Dangler of Sarasota, Fla. She has two grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Ashley Dangler and her son, Remington of Sarasota; and Joseph Dangler of Denver, Colo. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Earl Thompson, Jr. of Anderson, S.C., as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Shelva Yeary, her parents, and her sister, Brenda Thompson.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024 at 1 p.m. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. prior to the service. Inurnment will be in Brookside Cemetery in Tecumseh. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lenawee or Tecumseh Service Club.
