Woman dies after crash west of Tecumseh

TECUMSEH TWP. — A Jackson woman died Wednesday afternoon from injuries sustained in a crash at the intersection of M-50 and M-52.

Witnesses at the scene told Lenawee County sheriff’s deputies that crash happened at about 1 p.m. when an eastbound car collided with a tractor-trailer that had just turned from northbound M-52 onto eastbound M-50, a news release from the sheriff’s office said.

The initial investigation indicated that a 2006 Sterling semitrailer had stopped and waited to turn right on to M-50 from M-52, the release said. The driver of the semitrailer, a 34-year-old man from Adrian, began to turn right when eastbound traffic was clear. As the semi finished its turn, a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze approached the intersection traveling eastbound. Witnesses told deputies the Cruze was traveling at a very high rate of speed and traffic was clear when the semi began its turn. The Cruze crashed into the rear of the semi truck just east of the intersection. 

The Cruze’s driver, a 52-year-old woman from Jackson, was transported to ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital where she died from her injuries sustained in the crash, the release said.

The driver of the semi was uninjured. He was wearing his seatbelt, and neither alcohol nor drugs appear to have been a factor in his driving, the release said. The driver of the Chevrolet was not wearing her seatbelt and it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in her driving.

The Lenawee County Accident Investigation team responded to the scene, and this incident remain under investigation.

Neither the name of the woman who died nor the semi driver were released.
