Indians win sixth straight district title
Taking the Division 2 District wrestling title has become extremely hard for opposing teams that face Tecumseh's varsity wrestlers with the Indians defending their crown by winning 24-of-28 bouts to pick up their sixth consecutive title on Wednesday, Feb. 13.
The Indians defeated Ypsilanti 67-7 in the semi-finals and then dispatched the hosting Milan Big Reds 64-9 in the finals.
Tecumseh’s winners against Ypsilanti were junior Cass Marcum (void), C. J. Tripp (pin), freshman Jeff Jenkins (decision), junior Mike Butler (pin), senior Anthony Goodwin (pin), senior Sean Bagby (tech fall), senior Robert Weirich (pin), senior Shane Elkins (pin), junior Will Dotson (pin), senior Sam Bishar (decision), sophomore Kyle Connors (pin) and sophomore Josh Sisty (void).
Milan came into the final sporting a 33-8 record and a huge win over Adrian, its first ever win against the Maples in the school’s history.
The Indians weren't rattled in the least and jumped to a quick 26-0 lead with wins by Butler, Goodwin, Bagby, Weirich and Travis McPherson.
After a Milan win at 160-pounds, Simpson, Bishar and Connors tallied wins before Milan earned its last victory of the night at 285. Marcum, Tripp, Million and Jenkins finished the match with wins to round out the night.
Tecumseh advanced seven wrestlers to the Individual Regional competition at Warren Fitzgerald on Saturday, Feb. 16 and had two place second. Weirich finished second at145-pounds after an 11-10 loss to a number one state ranked wrestler, Devon Brown of Airport. Jenkins also was runner-up at 125-pounds losing to Airport’s Chris Cavins 5-0.
Finishing third for the Indians were Marcum (103), Bagby (135) and Connors (215). Fourth place Tecumseh regional qualifiers were junior Travis McPherson (152) and junior Drew Simpson (171).
The Indians are now 28-6 overall and look to win their third straight regional crown at Gibraltar Carlson on Wednesday. Tecumseh opens against Trenton in one semi-final, while Airport tangles with Dearborn Heights Annapolis in the other semi-final. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. The finals are set to start 20 minutes after the semifinal matches conclude with a trip to Battle Creek and the Elite 8 on the line.
