Patriots can’t catch a break at Sand Creek
BRITTON — Britton Deerfield’s (BD) varsity softball team lost 10-0 and 9-5 on Saturday, April 30, against visiting Flat Rock.
In game-one, BD batted only 19 times, and had seven strikeouts. Seniors Abbey Meinert and Ella Nighswander had one hit each for the Patriots. Meinert took the loss on the mound.
In game two, the Patriots recorded 12 hits but a late rally came up short. Laura Reau took the loss in the circle for her debut.
Nighswander had three hits, a double and a RBI; Jozie Scott had three hits and two RBI; Meinert had two hits with a double and a triple while Keili Sweinhagen, Laura Reau, Sydney Faust and Megan Wielfaert (2 RBI) each had a hit.
The Patriots lost 7-3 and 12-3 at Sand Creek on Wednesday, April 27.
“Well, if breaks were dollars we’d be broke,” said BD coach Jeff Scott. “We could not catch a break. We hit the ball hard, just at every Sand Creek player possible, and they were flawless. Us, on the other hand, had to try to play through errors, as we seem to dig ourselves in a hole every game.”
Hannah Alcock took the loss in the circle.
Meinert, Scott, Nighswander and Olivia Warner each had two hits. Warner and Alcock each had a RBI.
In game two the Patriots loaded the bases with one out but couldn’t come up with a clutch hit. It wasn’t until the fifth inning when the Patriots scored again with a triple from Sweinhagen, followed by a RBI single from Meinert, and two more RBI from Scott with her fourth home run of the year. However, that was it for the Patriots.
Sweinhagen went 3-for-4 with a triple for BD; Scott was 2-for-4 with a home run and Blake Southward, Meinert and Reau each added a hit.
