J. GILBERT PURSE

J. Gilbert Purse, 68, of Tecumseh, died February 1, 2008, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, after a brief battle with cancer.  Gil was born December 15, 1939, in Ferndale, MI, the son of A. Gilbert and Marguerite (Richards) Purse.

LOUIS P. TORRES "LOUIE"

Louie P. Torres, 44, of Adrian,  went to be with his Lord and Savior February 3, 2008.    Louie was born November 16, 1963 in Carson City, Michigan, the son of the late Pedro Torres and Gloria Torres Diaz.  

He was a 1981 graduate of Adrian High School and served his country in the U. S. Marines.  He visited the Jesus is Lord Ministry Church,  became a Christian and was loved by everyone.

VICTOR M. ORTIZ

Victor M. Ortiz, 83, of Adrian died Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at 12:41 p.m.  He was born February 20, 1924, in Lajas, Puerto Rico, to Manuel and Quintina (Torres) Ortiz.
Victor married Pauline Jones on February 19, 1955 in Angola, Indiana and she preceded him in death on June 19, 2003.  Victor worked for Tecumseh Products Company and he retired in 1986.

JAMES “MELVIN” HENRY, SR.

James “Melvin” Henry, Sr., 75, of Tecumseh, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at Toledo Hospital, as the result of an automobile accident on January 17, 2008.  He was born August 29, 1932, in Holloway, Michigan to George and Anna (Schlatter) Henry, Sr.  On April 15, 1950, he married Caroline Staulter in Adrian and she survives.

RUTH MAYNARD OSWALT

Ruth Maynard Oswalt passed away Dec. 23, 2007 in Sun City, Calif.  Ruth was born July 31, 1915, in Tecumseh, to Leon and Florence Maynard.  

She graduated from Tecumseh High School and married Ralph Oswalt.  
She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Janet; two sisters; and one brother.  

Ruth is survived by a grandson; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Ivan Buck Maynard; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Clinton Baptist Church on Feb. 2 at 11 a.m.

ROBERT R. “BOB” HOLMES

Robert R. “Bob” Holmes, 66, of Adrian, died Saturday, February 2, 2008, at home, surrounded by his wife and family.  He was born February 23, 1941, in Gasport, New York to Henry and Marian (Eisenhauer) Holmes. He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1974  serving in both Korea and Vietnam.   He married Patricia Holland on January 19, 2002 and she survives.  

Bob had been employed by Hillsdale Tool as a machinist. He was a member of the Church of Christ and the Viet Nam Veterans of America, Jackson Chapter.  He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and spending time in Oscoda.

RON MICALLEF

Ron Micallef, 72, of Adrian, died Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at Herrick Hospital.  He was born September 9, 1935, in Sliema, Malta, to Joseph and Kaynee (Calleja) Micallef.  On June 18, 1960, he married Mary Ellen Vermeulen, at St. David Catholic Church in Detroit.  

Ron was a member of the US Navy and Seebees.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.  Ron dearly loved his family and the time they spent together.  He enjoyed Civil War History, Computers and Music.

ROB E. ELLIOTT

Rob E. Elliott, 37, of Adrian, died January 22, 2008, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.    He was born July 27, 1970, in Trenton, MI, the son of Bobby and Pansy (Hall) Elliott.  

He was a graduate of Onsted High School, Class of 1988.   Rob was currently employed with Painters Supply, Adrian.  He was a lifelong car enthusiast and enjoyed going to car shows. Rob had a world class talent for restoring cars.

MARY ANN CARROLL

Mary Ann Carroll, 74, of Adrian, passed away February 1, 2008. Mary Ann was born June 29, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Edd and Louisa (Simmons) Snodgrass. On April 19, 1973, she married Robert Carroll in Belleville, Michigan.  He survives.  

RAFAELA CAPETILLO

Rafaela Capetillo, 76, of Adrian, passed away February 3, 2008. Rafaela  was born October 24, 1931, in San Antonio, Texas, the daughter of Augustin and Librada Rosales. On March 3, 1948, she married Pedro Capetillo in Adrian, Michigan.  He preceded her in death.   

DONALD EDWARD HANDY

Donald Edward Handy, 74, of Houghton Lake, formerly of Clinton, passed away Friday, February 1, 2008, at his home.  He was born March 10, 1933, in Brooklyn, MI, to Edward and Isma (Halsey) Handy.  On March 10, 1951, he married Margret Ann Casterline in Angola, IN.  She preceded him in death on June 23, 2003.  

Donald was a set up man with Ford Motor Company until his retirement on July 1, 1992.  Donald was a member of the Moose and JCC.  He loved to hunt, fish and bowl.

RITA COOK DAMON

Rita Cook Damon, 89, of Adrian, died Saturday, February 02, 2008, at Bixby Medical Center.  She was born September 16, 1918, in Findlay, OH, to George and Crystal (Hicks) Fornes.  In 1936, Rita married Harold Cook. He preceded her in death in 1968.  In 1976, she married Cal Damon in Adrian.  He preceded her in death in 1986. 

Council discusses debt repayment options

Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch outlined some repayment options that could be pursued for a Waste Water Treatment Tertiary plant upgrade that is being done, complying with new mandates from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Construction is under way on the project, which should be done by summer. The project is being funded by a State of Michigan Revolving Fund Loan, totaling approximately $1,965,000, and with a very low interest rate of 1.67 percent.

Michigan’s first legislative leader dog, Toby, dies

LANSING — The halls of the Michigan Legislature are a little quieter today as leaders and decision makers honor the life of Toby Spade (D-Adrian), Michigan’s first and only legislative leader dog. The constant companion of former state representative Doug Spade (D-Adrian) became a fixture in Lansing, as he was throughout Lenawee County, witnessing history first hand and rubbing shoulders with some of Michigan’s most influential and powerful individuals.
