Last Sunday night, my two other roommates and I filled out our absentee ballots together on the floor of our room. My housemates have all publicized on social media early in person voting or voting absentee from home. There are low occupancy debate watching parties.

Earlier this year, I worked as a Decennial Census Enumerator. Over 8 weeks I drove 3,500 miles through Lenawee, Hillsdale, Jackson and Washtenaw Counties. It was a privilege to get to see the immense diversity in the counties. Lack of mobile internet service, however, made the work difficult.

America is hungry. Throughout history, America has been hungry, with some markedly better times than others, but a segment of this population is hungry, and may always be unless structural change is introduced into the republic.

As we embark on the 2020-2021 Lenawee Cares Campaign, I have been taking time to reflect, spending time thinking about Lenawee County and all the amazing people that live here. I have been thinking about a book that has inspired me throughout my career and into my personal life.
