Applause and cheers greeted Tecumseh City Council’s unanimous decision on Monday to approve a zoning request by Adrian-based Neighbors of Hope, allowing for plans for a women’s and children’s homeless shelter at the former Herrick Manor.

Downtown Tecumseh’s 9th Annual Ice Sculpture Festival will return this weekend, with activities Saturday, Jan. 20 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 21 from noon until 4 p.m.

Frigid weather and heavy snowfall amounts bring special challenges to city service providers and local businesses. Keeping streets cleared of snow, water pipes flowing, fires at bay and furnaces running gives those in charge of such things some extra work during the winter.

Tecumseh City Manager Dan Swallow was scheduled to recommend Tonya Miller for appointment to the city clerk position at Wednesday’s council meeting. The regular Monday night meeting was moved to Wednesday due to the New Year’s Day holiday.

Mike Wells opened Black Fire Winery in late April 2016, and since then the establishment has become a popular spot for those who enjoy the country setting at 261 E. Munger Rd., wine from local grapes, a variety of appetizers on the menu, and entertainment by local musicians.
